“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.“ Matthew 6:5, NIV

Now, I don’t make a habit of quoting holy books, but it certainly can have some absolute zingers if you know even A LITTLE of its content and can spot hypocrisy.

I don't get it. Says "do not be like the hypocrites" but then says gOdd rewards the hypocrites.

The way I read it, J-Bro tells his homies that the only reward people who only pray to show off to others will get is the knowledge that others have seen them pray, nothing more.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 9 months ago (1 children)

What it actually is saying is that all that showing off IS their reward and God isn't going to do anything for them. To be fair, God isn't doing anything for anyone, so I guess you might as well put on a good show.

This, minus that last sentence.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago (1 children)

her conduct seems plenty christian to me.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago (3 children)

As a progressive Christian who hates everything MTG stands for, this is kind of disheartening to hear...

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I'm happily oblivious much of to (I assume) US politics, so I'm going to read this as if you're talking about Magic the Gathering.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I thought it was the conservative Christians who hate MTG...

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

And D&D and ICP and so many other things wonderful to me

They rail and they rally and burn books you see

"We must protect kids in the Land of the Free"

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

Many would trade a lot to be as blissfully ignorant.

I am not even sure how so much hate and ignorance lives in one woman without causing her to have constant strokes.

There is a reason why the discovery of the Gnostic Gospels was not publicized. The clergy and MTG's who have hijacked Christianity prefer a dogmatic religion mediated by them.

Jesus' "message" was more like poetry allowing the individual a direct experience with the numinous. More akin to Eastern mysticism and, dare I say, the philosophy of many Atheists. He probably was just one hippie amongst many but happened to go viral.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I mean you don’t often get an whole anthology dedicated to how much you told people they must show unconditional love and acceptance to everyone they meet unless your really dedicated to it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Most nights I fall asleep wondering what a world where most people were like that would look like.

A shitton better than the one we have I'll say that right now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Many of us grow up disappointed whether brought up religious or not. I was brought up Catholic and took it seriously but then as a teen I noticed the hypocrisy of church goers and of course, as all teens do, I understood adults lie about all sorts of stuff so why not religion.

Just now YouTube served me up this: Mom Puts Teenage Acidhead In A Mental Hospital In 1967.

It is as if LSD let him experience the Jesus state. No wonder clerics feared it - who needs them?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

There is desperate need for the concept of the Gnostic to take its rightful place in Christianity as a whole, there needs to be a reformation and I wish I had the resources and skills to start it.

There is such a stark difference between the compassionate, personal, and community-driven message Jesus spoke as compared to the insular, socially stingy, and hierarchical lives that his conservative supposed followers live.

And the sad thing is I really think they'd be a lot happier if they gave up on their worldly obsessions and bigotries and ACTUALLY read what he said. I know I am.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

in all honesty, you should have been disheartened long before this article, or my comment.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Oh I'm no stranger to how the right has perverted Jesus's message, and have been bitter about that for some time.

It's just... SO frustrating that they are so blind to hypocrisy especially considering what Jesus thought about outward displays of holiness with their mouths spouting the stench of rotting corpses.

If Jesus were alive today he'd take a lash to every fuckdamn one of them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Doesn't Jesus tell slaves to obey their earthly masters? Let's not white wash the thousands year old morals in that book and act like people that aren't all good today are just perverting what it said

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You aren't here for a discussion. All you want to do is parrot off a series of barbed questions you have curated from watching spicy youtubers.

And no one except you and other edgelads enjoy that.

Maybe next time come with an original thought or two.

Bye.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I'll come at you with an original thought when you can answer the repeated question lol complaining about people repeating things like Jesus supporting slavery doesn't work when all you do is sidestep the question
