I'm just asking for recommendations in case, I feel like migrating to a smaller instance or maybe try kbin for a change (but I'll miss the voyager web app)

Well, you can try mine, https://lemmings.world. It's federated with the bigger instances so you won't miss any content. It's well maintained and supported. And I plan on maintaining it long-term. Also it has Lemmings in the name.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I was going to suggest yours!

If you want a tiny instance, the one I'm on is https://rabbitea.rs

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Also it has lemming in the name. :) love it.

How are you defining "good" here? Off the top of my head I would say

  • lemm.ee
  • lemmy.sdf.org
  • lemmy.one
  • sh.itjust.works
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

This is a great list of general-purpose sort of "next step down in size from lemmy.world"-instances.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Well, by "good" I meant general purpose, no NSFW, federates with bigger instances, consitent uptime .. etc.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My instance fits most of that!

  • general purpose
  • federates with bigger instances (I even have a bot running that's subscribing to popular communities across Lemmy instances so the All feed is full of content and really comparable to the biggest instances)
  • consistent uptime (I have 100% according to lemmyverse.net and 98.87% according to fediverse observer)
  • the only criteria that doesn't fit is that I allow NSFW, but it has to be clearly tagged as NSFW, meaning you can simply disable NSFW on your profile

Hey, OP here. Just joined your instance.

Quick question... What do people usually do when they have accounts in multiple instances ?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Glad to see you here!

Well, depends on if you want to use the other account or not. I had an account on lemmy.world very briefly and I simply don't use it anymore. I didn't delete it in case I need it for some testing, but I don't use it.

Generally I'd say people use their app to login to multiple accounts? I know Liftoff (which I use) can do it, though I don't use the feature very much. I think I've read some apps can merge the feeds from all your accounts into one, though I don't know which (maybe even Liftoff can do it, I really don't know).

So probably lemm.ee and lemmy.sdf.org over the other two, then.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I moved to lemme.ee. i find the rules and regulations and reason for defederation in lemmy.world is so insane. and performance was also not good on lemmy.world. many users have made accounts on the server. Lemme.ee is fast and didn't have any downtime till now.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I have my tiny instance that currently has 4 users, with me being the most active. I update Lemmy regularly, upgrade and manage resources as needed, and even do server management via my phone when I need to. Federated with all of the big ones so there’s no lack in content and I’m always scouring for new communities to sub to. The only rule I have (aside from the ones stated in the rules page) is no NSFW. It’s mostly a CYA measure for myself.

Plus it has a fun URL!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Everyone should support small instances. It would be horrible if the entire lemmy network consists of like 10 large instances. And if people don't use the small instances, that will probably happen.

Support all the people who has an instance and wants to contribute to the Lemmy network.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Fediverse.observer is a good resource for sorting through and finding different instances for all types of activitypub platforms. There are pages for Lemmy and Kbin among plenty of others. That's how I found the instance I'm currently on, and I'm pretty happy with it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

We need a basic set of criteria to vet new small instances as minimally viable, what are they?

Just spitballing a few...

  • At least federated with large instances X, Y and Z...
  • X or above uptime percentage
  • no more than X ratio of users to posts
  • clearly stated content standards and a functional nazi/fascist/misinformation moderation effort

What do you think the list should be?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like mtgzone.com, but it might not be for everyone

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, Magic the gathering! I thought Marjorie Taylor Greene and was agreeing with you that it might not be for everyone.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Trying to imagine who would like her enough to make that. Conservatives only see her as a useful tool.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not a small instance. It has over 20,000 users.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I wasn't sure what OP meant by "small." I mean, it's user base is less than a fifth the size of .world, so maybe it counts.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Scroll to the bottom, tap instances, look around.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tried lemmy.world and lemmy.one but they were both down frequently last week. Bounced to lemm.ee and it's been great so far. The admin is knowledgeable and cares about hosting.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

lemmy.world is more often down than not

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

DDOS attacks have been hitting fediverse sights. LW is combating it. Once they lock it down the DDOS attacks will turn to the smaller servers.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If only lemmy.world would invest into something like stormwall, ddos-guard or nexuspipe. Cloudflare is complete dogshit against most modern ddos attacks (unfortunately).

This is not true. C'mon.

Does it go down? Yes. Annoying. Has it been down longer than it's been up? Of course not.

[–] [email protected] -4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Your admins suck at literally every facet of their jobs. It’s almost alarming people still flock to easily one of the worst run instances.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They are probably doing the best they can do..

[–] [email protected] -5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They really, really are not - from a technical or social lens. I remember an admin coming into a conversation to shut down comments and telling everybody to be nice to the nazis we were dunking on, or else.

They’re Spez - cryptofascists posing as liberals to create a captive audience they can push into the right wing pipeline.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good Lord, the name definitely checks out with you doesn't it?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

I am not, in fact, CM Punk, no

Imagine “u mad bro lol”ing someone talking about fucking nazis

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

Then get the fuck out of here and don't come back. Geez. What's the point of the fediverse if you're going to whine like a little redditor?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

At least it's a motivator to diversify to smaller instances.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

For a very small instance(10 users), you can try mine at endlesstalk.org. It also has multiple frontends hosted like lemmy.world and many others.

Otherwise I would recommend lemm.ee, lemmy.sdf.org and lemmy.zip

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The one I'm on is really good. There's been technical difficulties, but the admin is great.

LemmyIs.Fun Lemmy.BeyondCombustion.net Literature.Cafe

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm liking lemmy.one. federates with big instances, rarely downtime, and downvotes are disabled.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I've been enjoying Lemmy.blahaj.zone, though it's more niche given that it's an instance for trans people

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

slrpnk.net is great

I've also started hosting my own at prxs.site

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I just opened an account at https://sh.itjust.works after lemmy.world admins went berserk today. So far so good.

Seems super reasonable to me.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

At first glace, sure, but when you look into it deeper it's a cowardly move. For one, Hexbear made it perfectly clear they expect their users to abide by the rules of the instances they visit and not cause trouble. Also,

"Defederation should only be considered as a last resort . . . We made the decision to preemptively defederate"

Along with their stated goal to (emphasis mine)

Provide a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all members; regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, political affiliation, or other similar characteristic. Human comes first.

Not to mention how long they dragged their heels defederating from the fascists at exploding heads yet are preemptively defederating from hexbear. And to top it all off there's loads of comments calling hexbear users "Russian bot farms" and "a cesspool for genocidal lunatics." The whole thing is ignorant as hell.

On the other hand it was enough to convince me to switch away from lemmy.world, so there's that.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Meh. Sounds like a bunch of tankie bullshit.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago

Do you think they’re crypto fash? I’ve really been getting that impression
