Yep, I shouldn't have posted anything yet. We're preparing to make an update once the 72 hours for this thread are up.

That's a good idea. ~~I'm gonna look into it and see if there's a way to do this with Lemmy currently!~~

Actually, it's not possible in base Lemmy. A bot could be made to do this if someone develops it. Unfortunately I don't know how to make one.

I am so sorry about that. I kinda jumped the gun with that. We want to let everyone have a little bit more time to get settled again after a pretty eventful weekend.

I'm gonna try my best to make it make sense, please don't kill me for it.

Melina is actually a perfect example of the toxicity that's been present in our site culture, and I want to thank you for bringing it up. Previously our admins had been taking a rather forgiving and hands-off stance on things like moderation, site curation, and bans for Hexbear local users. It often took a lot of requests from both mods and users over a long period of time to actually get a ban for someone who was causing trouble.

We've all just been reminded how frustrating and confusing the previous style of administration could often be but I think there was some overcorrection that occurred, which has led to a number of the issues we find ourselves facing now.

I sincerely do hope you stay on the site as we pick up the pieces and work to make a better, less frightening, and more welcoming space for all of our users.

I want to apologize for my lack of vigilance over the past few days. I was on a mental health break from the site due to some events in my personal life, and I feel horrible that I wasn't there to help protect and reassure you and users like you who were shocked and upset by what was going on, especially given the perception most people had at the time.

I'm sorry.

This is a very authoritatively stated comment, which sure sounds like a triumph of the posting proletariat over an anti-fun admin cabal.

Literally zero people on the mod team, admin team, or anyone else who we have talked to has expressed a desire to make the site a more serious place. We're not out to kill shitposting. All of us are shitposters. We're changing the name of just a couple of the many shitposting comms on the site, because the previous names had racist origins. We also wanted to adjust some of the rules for these communities to be more welcoming to users from minority groups, based on their input.

Given the fact that this all turned into a truly wild struggle session, I'm not gonna be making any major moves at the moment other than the name changes.

For right now, please use c/gossip in place of the_dunk_tank, and c/counterpropaganda in place of the_dredge_tank. These were intended as 1:1 renames of the previous comms, first and foremost.

Hey, would you be okay with us holding a vote on whether or not c/fakenews should be closed?

Edit: voting has been delayed: we have decided to give the struggle session more breathing room.

Eliminating this unwelcoming insularity and hostility between users is a primary goal of the ongoing community changes we're working on here.

I want this to be a welcoming place for leftists of all stripes to come shitpost, hang out, and feel safe in a like-minded community.

Yes, a deeper discussion on this is forthcoming, but everyone needs a little bit of time to cool down before we have that conversation.
