I think I made my partner spiral and I'm not sure what to do. Godamn DNC lol

Personal Relationship Drama I need to Get Off my chestThey're a very progressive lib, I love them to death, we're even getting married. I read and listen to more about socialist stuff, but they 100% do more IRL praxis and organizing than I do both in work and their free time, while my job pays the bills, but is a multiplier of the capitalist hellscape we all live in. Anyway, they were on cloud 9 all week, loving the DNC, was super happy after the last speech, etc. Unfortunately they brought up Palestine, I think trying to cheer up my maybe less than enthused reaction because they know it's something I care about, and said at least they mentioned it a couple times, and they probably can't talk about it too much because of on going negotiations, but we should see how things shake out in the next week or so, etc. I couldn't help myself, and said I will try to believe that to cope.

"Cope?" "Well ya, I would love to believe that, I just find it a little hard. Bibi has been dangling a ceasefire forever. What happened to the one the UN approved before? That was supposed to be be "Israel's" deal. But now Hamas is coming off as the reasonable ones for not wanting to negotiate because they keep changing the negotiations until they can kill the next negotiator. I would stop negotiating if I was them, too!"

I then went on to say that I wish I could've been swept up in the hype, too, and I was sometimes, but I didn't enjoy it as much as them because every time the speakers talked about sticking up for the voiceless, the minorities, the people, I thought about the Palestinians they didn't let give the most DNC-basic speech ever. Every time they talked about not tolerating bullies, I thought about the US cozying up to one of the biggest bullies in the world in Israel. Every time they said Israel has a right to defend itself, I asked myself why doesn't Palestine. They let families of the hostage speak, who then said more about Gaza civilians than our own politicians. It was hypocritical.

Well, then my partner cried themselves to sleep, and has been silent and sad all today, too. They said they feel stupid for being the only one to enjoy it, that they were feeling so elated and full of hype and now it's gone, and they feel kind of like a fool for feeling that hype. I guess I knocked the wind out of their sails, and apparently the "h" word hit super hard because they said they've been thinking about it all day. Not sure in what way. Are they going to come at me angry and with some counter argument later, or if do they feel as guilty as I do for being caught up in this colonial project and is feeling about it weird that way, too? Idk. Guess I'll find out when I get home later tonight.

All I know is that they've been anxious all day, apparently on the verge of a panic attack, terse and muted in texts, not even sure they've enjoyed their outing with friends. Fuck. Idk what to do. They're happiness and optimism was kind of keeping me sane. I should've just kept it all balled up inside of me like I usually do lol. I want to tell them that these have been my thoughts all week, that the contradictions have been causing me unease and psychic damage. But then I know they'll feel even worse and I don't need them taking on my emotions when they are clearly going through something and can barely handle their own right now.

I need some release on these feelings that won't backfire on our relationship. Hopefully organizing helps. I already said in another thread this might be the push I need to join a local org. If they do come for a fight later today, they can accurately point out that I don't do much than post and read, and I've even been reading less recently; there won't be anything I can say to that but get owned lol. If it helps them feel better, it's probably worth it for the mood in our house to improve. And maybe that will help me push me more to do something active, touch grass, talk to people, and that will in the long run help me feel better about living in the imperial core, where I benefit from these abhorrent policies.

Will keep that in mind. But it seems like less work to join than PSL lol.

First there was the complete silence. Then they confirmed they wouldn't have a Palestinian speaker. Then she mentioned it in her speech and I had a quick bit of hope, even if she mentioned it after Israel. But then she couched it in another Israel comment, like a compliment sandwich but with pro-genocide comments wtf at least lie to us that you'll do something like every other politician? You can't even dignify us with that?

Tbh that's kind of me. Like, I'm a communist and a socialist, but I've never joined an organization. But now, I'm thinking I should join my local DSA or PSL, someone protesting this shit, to help elevate it to the point that these fucks can't keep ignoring it. Watching the last speech melted my brain lol.

So TMZ was told it was going to be Beyonce. Another influencer was told it would be Taylor Swift. I have no idea if some DNC staffer was pulling people's legs or what lol.

I think that was it lol. Some source at the DNC trolling people.

So where was my secret guest? I was expecting a secret guest!

That seems to be what they're figuring out. The right wing candidate didn't even submit their voting tallies to the Supreme Court or participate in any of the investigations while everyone else did (including other anti-Maduro candidates). What are they supposed to use to determine popular will? Screenshot of papers printed in Machado's basement?

I wouldn't be surprised if some shenanigans happened until they publish their results by polling location, but until then all we have to go on is uncooperative opposition and US-based think tanks (the country that's tried to coup Venezuela basically every other year since Chavez).

Ehhh, would they? Weren't there liberals who disagreed with Trump on everything but him killing the Iranian general, or withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement? I'm sure they would still completely ignore Palestine if he won and was helping its genocide even more. They'd bring up other social or culture war issues and focus on those instead. Although, I suppose the one good thing is his bloodthirsty rhetoric might make it more obvious.

Of course he was. I should've been able to guess that, too.

I agree. I think live streaming the genocide is actually doing something. I think it's why more people care now about Israel rhna at any point I've seen in my lifetime, and why they're trying to do things like ban Tik Tok. The easier they can make it to avoid by not showing images or stories in mainstream media, censoring social media like (Meta has been doing), and banning alternative media (like Tik Tok), the less resistance they will face.

Who is that lady who spent her entire speech talking about "communist dictators" then compared Trump to them at the very end? I'm guessing some reactionary Cuban or Venezuelan immigrant? I tried not to roll my eyes too hard at that point when in front of my lib family but it was tough.

I'm watching the DNC, and it's made me even more aware of the power of liberal bourgeois democracies to let out a little revolutionary energy whenever it gets close to the edge, through concessional policies, like New Deal policies or whatever Kamala might do if she wins, or even the act of voting and campaigning itself. Do they have to go through a fascism phase first, or has there been a liberal bourgeois democracy that has successfully had a socialist revolution? Will it take new theory to figure it out?

I'm about halfway done with the last season of the Revolutions podcast and up to date with Blowback. I'm probably going to be looking for another fun history podcast to listen to soon to throw into my rotation with The Dollop, to break up the pop culture, comedy, or news podcasts.

I recently listened to the Kissinger episodes of Behind the Bastards and they seemed pretty informative and funny. Also apparently it's by some old Cracked people, and I'm a fan of all those old Cracked content creators. But the first episode says it's about Stalin, so I'm guessing it's like in the progressive but lib direction? I don't mind, just want peoples thoughts on it before I decide to start or look for something else. How is it for people who have listened to it?

I have been listening to Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast for awhile and have been loving it. So far, the Haitian season might be my favorite but the Mexican one has been pretty good, too. I'd highly recommend it to everyone interested in history so far. Although hearing about all the failed leftist revolutions from 1848 has been very depressing lol.

Anyway, I'm about to finish the Mexican Revolution season and am wondering, for people who have listened to this podcast who are communists, socialists, and/or anarchists, what do you think of the rest of the podcast - which looks to be all the Russian Revolution?

So far, the podcast has been surprisingly radicalizing, but I heard that Mike himself is more of a centrist and is personally critical of communism and Lenin.

He's earned enough goodwill from me up to now for me to listen to it anyway, it's not like I need all my media to be communist propaganda (or I could never watch anything). Plus, I'm sure they did make a ton of mistakes back then. But, I'm mostly just wondering what I'm about to get into here exactly.

Even handed critiques of the revolutionaries but also with appropriate context, like the Haiti or French Revolution season? A bit of emotional bias but with mostly accurate facts? Missing context and reframing of Cold War red scare propaganda? Or he's been radicalized more than I thought and he turns into a communist this season? How good is it, and how does it rank with other seasons?

Should I ask the same thing in Lemmygrad, too? Looking for leftist history nerd opinions, because I haven't seen them on the other site on this season specifically. Also, any supplemental reading or stuff to watch to better understand this final, giant section of the podcast, especially if it explores facts or perspectives he isn't already going to get into? Let me know!
