Feeding Time

I took this image through my storm door yesterday. I thought about isolating the northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in flight, but the whole scene, although maybe not a photogenic, is more interesting.

In my story, after Frankie flees back through the hole under the fence, Sam flies up to a feeding platform in the middle of space beyond the hole. Sam is enjoying the solitude when the cardinal twins, Carl and Cody show up. The twins are annoying, and Sam thinks "c'est la vie."

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Take a look:

Good morning. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿฉด๐ŸŒŠ

22 December 2024

I've been sitting here with my eyes closed, resting my head on my fingers. Before this, I was in bed in a deep sleep, dreaming about trying to get ready to take a physical fitness test. I was at a place that I've been before, but never outside my dreams. It is weird because my dreams seem to have some sort of broken continuity, like memory within my dreams. Much of what was in my dream is already starting to fade away. Because I tend to forget about dreams in time, I'm not sure whether the memory within my dreams is a memory from previous dreams; or if the memory exists only within the current dream. Anyway, I heard my wife say, "Ben is up walking around" and I got up.

Pelican's Mirage

Here is a brown pelican (elecanus occidentalis) on a timber pile about 100 meters or so out from shore in the ocean. Hmmm ... it may be farther than 100 meters. Out above the horizon appears ghostly images perhaps a mirage of the ocean itself.

Back in those days, it was manageable mostly because there was no other way to get it done. Now days, people might lay back and flip through the channels as soon as a commercial comes on and the remote control is the only way to change the channel.

That sounds about right. I had one, but it grew old fast.

The Hole Beneath the Fence

Frankie, the fox squirrel, ventured underneath the hole beneath the fence. Frankie's friends told him that the place beyond place beyond the hole was filled with lots of food, just there for the taking. But they warned that the place was also filled with danger, because there were two dogs, named Ben and Charlie, who regularly patrolled the area. Once under the fence Frankie noticed that the dogs weren't there, but Sam the house sparrow was on the ground atop a low brick retaining wall. Frankie asked Sam, "where is all of the food that I heard so much about?" Sam said, "look up." But just as Frankie looked up, Ben and Charlie came running out of the door to the house and Frankie had to flee back under the hole beneath the fence.

Springtime Goldfinch

This is an American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis).

"This handsome little finch, the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington, is welcome and common at feeders, where it takes primarily sunflower and nyjer. Goldfinches often flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy." - allaboutbirds.org

Good morning. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฟ

21 December 2024

I got up early this morning, thanks once again to Ben; so, I made coffee and let the dogs out - in case you were wondering who. Now I'm up struggling while Ben and Charlie are fast asleep.

It is bundle up weather where I live in Louisiana (34ยฐ F or 1ยฐ C) which translates to shirt sleeve weather in Minnesota. Do you know what is weird? It is not surprising that the United States adopted the Imperial System of measurement along with the British Empire (British Weights and Measures Act of 1824), what is surprising is that after the rest of the world moved on to the metric system, the United States did not - change is difficult in the United States of America.

'Thus, the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet.' - Dave Barry

Pond Companions

I haven't posted a photo of these ducks in a while. I saw these ducks at a pond in a ritzy neighborhood of mini mansions just north of Houston, Texas. I watched and photographed them for two or three days and I think they are domestic ducks that somebody, perhaps the developers of the area, freed into the pond for aesthetic purposes, but I'm just guessing.

Good morning, โ›น๏ธโ›น๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธโ›น๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

I made my own lyrics, but you have to guess the tune: ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽถ

Sometimes in the morning
I see you standing there
With whiskey on your breath
And toothpaste in your hair
In an ocean full of wonders,
Why can't you swim with me
In this life's fleeting game,
We are finally free ...

I might drive out to the lake this morning with my camera, but I have to wait until after mealtime. Afterall, I can't let Ben and Charlie go hungry. That is something that they have never experienced - lucky dogs.

โ€œA well-trained dog will make no attempt to share your lunch. He will just make you feel so guilty that you cannot enjoy it.โ€ -Helen Thomson

About the bird, of course, about the name itself, I couldn't say.

Here is a dark eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) that probably flew down here in Louisiana from Canada for the winter.

"Juncos are the "snowbirds" of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in, and then retreat northward each spring. Other juncos are year-round residents, retreating into woodlands during the breeding season, or, like those of the Appalachian Mountains, moving to higher elevations during the warmer months." -

I had to look up Rediffusion, it sounds a bit like Cable TV.

Yes, Can I Help You!

This great blue heron (Ardea herodias) looks really annoyed.

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

Good morning, friends. ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ

19 December 2024

Once upon a time in the olden days I had a portable television that I purchased used because I could not afford a new one. This television had a 14-inch screen and rabbit ears on top of the set. Now I realize that people born in the 21st Century may not know what rabbit ears are, so I will attempt a description: rabbit ears were a sort of indoor antenna made two extendable rods that looked rather like the feelers on an insect - bet that cleared it up. While the TV worked okay it had one minor defect, there was no knob to turn the channel; so, I improvised with pliers. Okay, I should explain what a knob was on a TV, but I'm out of characters.

"Whatever people thought the first time they held a portable phone the size of a shoe in their hands, it was nothing like where we are now, accustomed to having all knowledge at our fingertips". - Nancy Gibbs

Tropical Kingbird in Focus

This tropical kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) was hanging out near the port at Roatan, Honduras a couple of years ago.

"One of the most common sights in Middle and South America, the handsome Tropical Kingbird sits on utility lines, fences, and exposed trees seemingly everywhere. These big, gray-and-yellow flycatchers catch insects on impressive pursuit flights, usually returning to the same perch to eat their catch. In the United States, the species nests just into southernmost Texas and Arizona, where it inhabits towns, ranches, and lowlands of many sorts, especially near water. ..." - allaboutbirds.org

She is not. Though she didn't gift it to the guild, per se, she gifted it to a member of the guild. She didn't use it anymore anyway.

Today's young people will probably reminisce in the future about the days when people had to actually have something in their hand to make a phone call or look up something on the internet.
