I'm okay with this phrase except for the word "intent". If we give someone the power to try to assess our intent, it can easily go the way of totalitarian states where they say you have a bad intent any time you criticize the government.
You should be punished for outcome, not intent. If you say something provably untrue that results in riots or murders, you should be held accountable for the outcomes of those statements. This is not that different from our current libel laws.
There seems to be little credible hard evidence on either side, so anyone claiming to know the real truth here is just talking out of their ass.

Protect from what? It will certainly protect him from fish. I think it will work against anything without claws, and if he's up against something with claws, I think they would easily pry the shells apart too. Even against something with claws he could maybe crawl to the other side of the cup- they likely wouldn't open enough to crush the whole cup.
I have to wonder if the cup wasn't really better for him though. He could hide up in there and still see out, and I'd imagine predators had never seen an octopus in a plastic cup before, whereas they are probably quite aware of shellfish.

I don't have any problem with women competing openly and without scrutiny in men's athletics competition because I can't think of any sport where it would confer an advantage. If there were one, I would be against it in that sport. Though safety would still need to be a consideration in any contact sport.
Also worth mentioning, I am not against the idea of getting away from the idea of having sports separated by sex completely, and somehow tiering them by ability. But I think that would be exceedingly difficult to do in a way where it was safe and fair for everyone, especially when it comes to boxing and martial arts. But for other non contact sports, I don't see any reason to have a division by sex at all, just have tiers from best to worst.
I don't think any of this matters until you get to college level or olympic level sports, at which point I highly doubt it would dissuade any would be competitor. But I do think if it got bad enough it could dissuade women. For example, if you just let men compete openly and without scrutiny in any women's athletics competition, which seems to be what some people are advocating for here.
