I want to volunteer and stuff, but that would also make them say "this guy is trying too hard, definitely a spy."

Just be normal, and interact with people normally, would ve my guess. Integrate into the community, how depends on your location and your interests. Just don't isolate yourself, it is unhealthy and contraproductive.
