I had a relative who believed this and declined a raise for that reason.

This is the reason why they don’t teach taxes in school. It is for people to do this.

My boss doesn't want to give us raises because he thinks he's protecting us from taxes. We told him numerous times we'd prefer the raises than "saving on taxes".
