I had a relative who believed this and declined a raise for that reason.

This is the reason why they don’t teach taxes in school. It is for people to do this.

My boss doesn't want to give us raises because he thinks he's protecting us from taxes. We told him numerous times we'd prefer the raises than "saving on taxes".

That’s also not how taxes work, so your boss just thinks all of you are stupid.

That he does. He's a 65 year old manchild.

Username implies it's satire but who knows, I have met people that actually believe this.

This is satire.

I never understood the tax bracket thing, does going up really make the taxes that much worse?

My father actually got a very tiny raise that basically did nothing except bump him up to the next tax bracket 💀 why don't they just graduate taxes or something

What? That's not how taxes work at all.

It is in the US apparently.

No it is not. Your father got up to the next tax bracket, but the tax rate for every bracket only applies to the income earned within that bracket. Unless there is some very specific fuckery going on, or there is something up with means tested benefits, it is impossible for your taxes to increase faster than your income.

Are there any countries with a fucked-enough tax system that getting bumped up a tax bracket means you have less money?
