I firmly believe that any grad student should be able to explain their research in broad layperson terms. If the only thing a graduate can do to explain their research is copy paste the abstract of their thesis, that reflects very badly on the student. I have more faith in marxisthayaca

For example, my grad studies were on recovering valuable materials out of industrial waste.

100%. I just think caution is warranted for certain cases where a small amount of detail and the year of graduation might be enough to personally identify someone.
