So I have read like 3/4 of this article and he is my take: China doesn't have to be perfect to still defend it even amidst some uncertainty about this issue. Has the CPC over-stepped in its efforts to curb terrorism? Maybe. Has it been successful? Yes.
What is quite obvious is that the reality is nothing like the depiction in Western media. To me, it seems like a successful and humane approach to stopping terrorism, from a country that has learned not to deal in half measures.
It is important to remember that re-education has come alongside massive investment into the livelihood of all people in Xinjiang. The problem of terrorism will not resurface because there is greater quality of life and opportunity for Uyghurs, which is something we can easily look at plethora of data to defend. What else is certain is that the US has been actively propping up this terrorism since at least 2004.
In the US, things like mass incarceration, genocide, political repression and disenfranchisement, and police violence are all just considered a normal part of life. Our entire legal system is just a Rube Goldberg device for putting black people in shackles, and Natives barely even exist anymore as a result of deliberate genocide. How can you even compare the two countries? Has China made mistakes, and could aspects of this be included? Of course, but at least they are even trying to solve problems instead of just turning every problem into a get rich quick scheme at the cost of human lives.
