I went and checked... That's a mischaracterisation. A lot of people are excited, a lot of people are asking what Lemmy is. Some people are saying it sucks but that's not the general vibe. There are quite a few people saying they visit both Reddit and Lemmy and enjoy Lemmy a lot more and go there first.
Jives with my own experience, TBH.
I bet a large number of the negative comments only checked out Lemmy the weeks of the protests. I think their critiques are very accurate for that time period. But I think Lemmy now is a lot better than a month ago and a viable alternative to Reddit.
As long as the masses don't all flock to just one server, the next time reddit fucks up it'll be a much softer place to land. The only problem is the niche communities and they're survivability when transferring over.
This really does feel like the early days of reddit. Where small, niche communities have to just keep plugging along until they hit a self-sustaining number of active users, and I didn't realize how much I missed that till I came here.
It's so much more personal. It's way better to get 20 upvotes and 15 comments on a community of 150 than it is to get 1k upvotes on a community of 125k
I tried to explain this during the tumultuous time to people but most of the reaction I got was 'it didn't work perfectly the one time I used it so it's not actually worth more than hot shit'.
Good, honestly. I personally could do without the type of person to write something off as bad on a single individual interaction with something that has a legitimate reason to not operate 100% at perfect level. It's childish and I would rather those people stay on reddit and ruin THAT place

They can enjoy the shitty official app
or use patched third party clients
No matter the tutorial, written or video, I can never get a revanced version of any app (Sync & YT) working. In the end I just gave up Reddit and got NewPipe for YT.
Idk about reddit but I've been using ReVanced YouTube ane YouTube Music for a while and it works perfectly. Let me know if you need help getting it set up.
Relay still works for some reason
Pretty sure they are operating at a loss while they roll out a subscription model.
Yep, but I'm willing to bet that the dev negotiated something behind the scenes with Reddit to get extra time. If not, he's probably racking up some serious API costs as Relay is one of the few remaining third-party apps that works without any modifications.
Why would reddit be lenient? Reddit doesn't want 3rd party money. if they did they would have put out decent rates that 3rd party apps could actually support and would have generated revenue from all the apps. Their goal was to kill them all and they will. The number of people willing to pay $10-12/mo for a reddit 3rd party client that doesn't allow NSFW posts is going to be tiny.
Anyone still using reddit is a lost cause at this point. They've thrown their lot in with reddit's changes wholly.
Either people didn't care, and they're the people Reddit really wants them to be, happy with any greedy corporate decision - or they did care and gave up. Not saying what we're doing is all that high and mighty, it is just social media after all, but on that note it's just social media. If you aren't willing to stick to your morals with these small things then what does that say about you and the big things?
Damn, it's almost like the people that still reddit are the ones you wouldn't want here in the first place
Its a feature not a bug. They can stay in their corporate containment hellhole far away from the awesome communities on Lemmy.
while they have either A) never tried it or B) they came here for 20 minutes and left
Probably viewed the active local feed and never looked further.
