Anarchism is a social movement that seeks liberation from oppressive systems of control including but not limited to the state, capitalism, racism, sexism, speciesism, and religion. Anarchists advocate a self-managed, classless, stateless society without borders, bosses, or rulers where everyone takes collective responsibility for the health and prosperity of themselves and the environment.

Giuseppe "Pino" Pinelli (1928 - 1969) was an Italian railroad worker and anarchist who fell to his death on this day in 1969 while being detained by Italian police. His death became the subject of the play "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" by Dario Fo.

Pinelli was a member of the Milan-based anarchist association named "Ponte della Ghisolfa", and was also the secretary of the Italian branch of the Anarchist Black Cross. He organized young anarchists in the "Gioventu Libertaria" (Libertarian Youth) in 1962 and helped found the "Sacco and Vanzetti anarchist association" in 1965.

A few days before Pinelli's death, Italian fascists from the "Ordine Nuovo" orchestrated a bombing campaign in Milan; one bomb in Piazza Fontana killed 17 people and injured 88. The bombing was blamed on Italian anarchists, and Pinelli was detained along with many other leftists, including Pietro Valpreda, who was falsely convicted and served eighteen years in prison.

Just before midnight on December 15th, 1969, Pinelli fell to his death from a fourth floor window of the Milan police station. Three police officers interrogating Pinelli, including Commissioner Luigi Calabresi, were put under investigation in 1971 for his death, but legal proceedings concluded it was due to accidental causes.

Calabresi was later gunned down at his home in 1972, for which left-wing journalist Adriano Sofri was convicted in 1997.

Because they're stupid the Canadian government is not doing sales tax on food and booze from now until Christmas. Which means tips are gonna be 15% lower. People tip on a percentage of their bill, no tax added means smaller tips. Way to fuck over the working class to benefit businesses who are gonna do just fine over Christmas.

Are tips big in Canada? I kinda assumed Canadian labour stuff was similar to Australia's where tipping basically doesn't exist

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

It seems about the same as America except you can't pay people less than minium wage 8f they're expected to get tips

"canadian culture" is pretty dominated by america.

they use to have some laws with tv and radio music where there had to be a certain level of canadian originated content - don't know if that translated to today with the internet

america's dominance in media and hollywood is used to reinforce american imperialism across the world, english is the language of imperialism, canada never stood a chance to being next to it and sharing the common default langauge

but yeah tipping is a thing, i can't tell you how big it is like with a poll, but i've always tipped at restaurants

French poll asking people who they think contributed the most to the defeat of the Nazis - data from 1945 to 2004

the canadian thing is basically "we're not as bad as america" justin trudeau did it best when he said we're just a bunch of people here to do stuff when describing canadian culture

(I will also say that maybe upper class restaurants have tipping here, but I wouldn't know. I've never tipped at McDonalds or the local pub or anything.)

ah shit i thought by default pubs were suppose to tipped at, haven't really gone to many in my life yet tho

fast food place never tipped tho

i heard it said that ontario did away with the servers minimum wage except students, still shit and the bourgeoisie are not paying us the full value of our labour - but slightly better?

i dunno if restaurants are willing to adjust the menu prices for something that will only last a few weeks tbh, petite bourgeois tendencies might just lead them to keeping the price the same and pocketing the difference

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

That was a long time ago. And yes they did, taxes aren't included in menu prices anyway. The petite bougie tendency has been to have a fifteen percent off sale at no expense to them and get way more business
