Hello all,

That time of the week again, and wow, what a quiet week! Which is really nice in retrospect because I've been able to chill out and enjoy Lemmy for a bit!

In case you want to see how this instance has developed, have a look at the previous parts.

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8

There isn't much to add this week, but I'll add the usual bits and bobs for people to have a look at.

TL;DR

  • Donations - We now accept Crypto!
  • Interaction - No lurking please!
  • Stats - Graphs 'n' stuff

Donations

I've had a few people ask if we can accept crypto donations, and now I can finally say yes, we do accept them. I've added the details in the side bar, but I'll put them here as well:

BTC Addressbc1q0d9exd4ueqwxdpr909k302525hnq3fxs9ga9dq

ETH Address0x07e0102D3Ab219847f0303ca365d295F737D9315

Monero Address42spx9DQH3C9A9YwXcc2ZXWZ6bncq2u4Hi7mwntxkxpQLziar8btobp4Tv9gciPiEE8Q4wGkk6RK67mSh2C8G1vs7XxkPxm

Any crypto donations will be converted to fiat and added to the the OpenCollective website, which we're keeping updated with expenses so we can be as transparent as possible with funding. If you feel you want to donate, please be assured every single bit goes to keeping the server going (and if we are financially secure enough, we'll be upgrading the server for better performance).

Anyone who does donate will get their name in the Thank You Thread. If you use your real name and want me to put your Lemmy.zip username instead, please send me a PM and I'll update it ASAP.

Interaction

Welcome to all new Lemmy.zip users! I think we've had lots of lemmy.world refugees recently, so I hope you're enjoying your time on this instance. If you're new to Lemmy altogether, welcome to the fediverse!

Each week I post a reminder to new and existing users that interaction is what keeps Lemmy growing. An upvote here, a quick comment there... it all goes to keeping Lemmy growing.

If you see content you like, please interact with it!

Stats

Time for pretty pictures!

CPU usage over the last week.

Some network related graphs:

Image storage - Agonizingly close to 100gb of stored images.

Cloudflare Usage over the last 7 days

And finally, visitors from around the world: USA firmly back on top, Finland falling behind Germany!

Thats it for this week. Next week will probably be my last one before Starfield is released and I move into a gaming cave and don't emerge for 3 months :)

I got a question: I have trouble commenting sometimes, like I write a comment, press the button and it just keeps loading with nothing happening.

When I make a comment in a community on another instance, does the comment get put on this instance and federated? Or does the comment happen on the community instance and gets federated back to lemmy.zip? If it's the former then it's probably no surprise things don't work if the community is on lemmy.world for example.

Edit: Scratch that, I checked the actual error and it's a "language not allowed" error. I was commenting on a post on [email protected] and selected "English" as language. Trying to comment again with "Undetermined" worked. Is something broken with the language selection? Unfortunately the UI never gives you a reason why it bugs out, instead of showing a "Language not allowed" error.

Second edit: I got the lemmy.world admins to fix the issue, just a mishap with the allowed languages. But a proper error message would be lovely instead of having to look at the network tab and seeing a 400 error there :)

Well that was quick! Glad it was resolved. As you've figured, posts go via their servers therefore their rules setup. If a mod/admin doesn't define a language then it defaults to undetermined and that causes issues when you comment in another language. It's a bit of a weird system that I think shouldn't exist, there isn't a need to tag language unless you wanted to filter out all posts of a certain language, but then communities have rules around languages so it just seems to complicate things :)

Glad it's resolved :)

I actually really like the language selection and get annoyed when it isn't used. For example I speak German and English, so by selecting my languages in my profile (+ Undetermined) I mostly see posts I can actually read, even on All. I'd rather remove undetermined instead of the language selection (as every post and comment probably has a language) :)

And to be honest I do get bothered when an entire community doesn't use the language selector, because suddenly my feed is full with french posts for example and I have to block each community from showing up.

That's another way of looking at it! I suppose it's better to have more options than less 😅
