MODERATORS

In case you missed the post from earlier today, we are now the "owners" of [email protected] (in addition to [email protected]).

The mods over there transferred ownership of the community to us so that we can better grow the PlayStation community as a whole on Lemmy. Essentially, we are much more active over here on c/ps5 by comparison. We are also growing steadily in subscriber count.

How would this community feel about following us over to [email protected]?

To answer a few questions you likely have:

1. What would happen to c/PS5?

  • We would continue to be mods but consistent posting would shift to c/PlayStation instead. This means that the weekly discussion threads and regular content you have come to enjoy at c/PS5 would instead continue over on c/PlayStation. The community can continue to use c/ps5 if they wish.

2. Why transition again? Didn't you already do this with c/PS5 from Lemmy.ml to Lemmy.world?

  • This is just a hypothetical question for now and we are seeking community feedback to make the best decision. I have been friendly with the former mods of c/PlayStation since the beginning and had no intention of merging or migrating PS5 over there. They reached out and asked if we would be interested in taking the reigns and we accepted. We are now asking the community if a transition, merge, or some 3rd option would be in the best interests of both communities. Based on feedback today from a pair of posts both here and on c/PlayStation, the overwhelming opinion appears to be in favor of a merge. If you have an alternate suggestion in maintaining both c/PS5 and c/PlayStation as separate communities we are interested to hear your ideas/opinions.

3. What would change other than the community location? Would posting rules be different?

  • I anticipate that business would continue as usual. We would still mainly be a news and discussion focused community. Since PS5 is the current gen console most of the news would be PS5 focused. What would be different is that we would allow content for all PS consoles, PS Studios, and PS Movies and TV. As for lower effort content (such as screenshots, memes, show off posts, etc.) We would likely allow it in a limited fashion and perhaps introduce sticky posts or certain days of the week if posts of this type grow in quantity. We want to remain news and discussion focused.
  • Our co-mod (@[email protected]) is the lead mod for [email protected], so if you are wondering how we would run c/PlayStation, just go look at c/Nintendo and that should give you an idea of our intentions.

Again, nothing is concrete at this moment. We received a good amount of feedback from c/PlayStation subscribers on this topic in favor of a merge, but responses from c/PS5 were not too large in quantity (even though the sentiment was the same). That is why I am making this post at a different time of day to gauge interest and feedback.

Ultimately we may consider putting out a poll/survey to make this vote more official, but for now we are looking for your opinions to guide our decision together. Please post your opinions and feedback below.

I'm in favor. However, I think shuttering c/PS5 would be better than leaving it open/active if the intent is to consolidate and grow the community. A loosely moderated and largely disused secondary community will just draw some of that precious engagement away from c/Playstation. When the PS6 is announced it can be opened back up :-)

I hear this and will closely monitor the situation, but I don't have the same fears tbh. I post 99 percent of all content anyway so it would only remain as active as the second most active user. Leaving it open for the community to use if they wish is the current plan.

Although I created it, I don't believe I own it. It belongs to the community. What I do own is my own time and effort, which when I switch to posting primarily on c/PlayStation will be my prerogative.

So are you just asking us to vote where you should post your content? I think most of us are only here because we subscribed to the PS5 subreddit. I don’t think the Lemmy community is big enough to be so spread out just yet.

Well, I'm asking where I should focus community building and if the c/PS5 community would see a benefit of taking over the c/PlayStation community together. Moving efforts from c/PS5 to c/Playstation is an effort to decrease how much we are currently spread out by bringing PS5 content under the PlayStation umbrella. The benefit to c/PS5 subscribers is that there theoretically will be more people available for discussions if we move our conversations over there. Onboarding of new subscribers will be wider as well. For example, people who like the Last of Us TV show but don't necessarily have a PS5 can join in on discussions with PS5 gamers, so when the next last of us game drops there are more people engaging in discussions. Win win. Additionally there are people who love PlayStation but won't join a PS5 community because they don't own a PS5 yet. These people still have opinions and would probably engage in discussions about, say, the latest spiderman 2 game.

Just like the [email protected] community isn't strictly about the switch, switch content is still the primary content. Similarly I wouldn't be changing my posting topics or style, as PS5 is still the current gen platform and all the news focuses on that already.

Down the line lemmy is working on a tagging system similar to flair on reddit. This would allow more choice for subscribers to filter posts they want and don't want to see.

As it stands now, c/ps5 is the de facto "PlayStation" community on lemmy. We are the only active community with enough members that posts content regularly and consistently and is seeing day over day consistent subscriber growth. We would really just be rebranding and opening up a little bit in terms of allowable content. Allowing more content on other topics will not reduce the amount of ps5 content we are currently putting out.

If you are concerned about ps4-psx posts clogging up the feed, go over to [email protected] and scroll down and see how long it takes you to see a wiiU-nes post and you'll see that c/Nintendo is basically a switch community. Additionally, when PS6 comes out, we would have to build that new community from scratch, whereas if we build under c/PlayStation we won't have to. I'm just trying to think longer term.

I think makes more sense with c/PlayStation. Having a console specific community only makes sense of people want to talk about old hardware. My sense with Lemmy is communities are built to replicate what is on Reddit but they really ought to be formed more spontaneously in response to some schism or if enough people have a need for that group.

I see your point. As it stands now, since c/PS5 is the de facto PlayStation community (we are the most active) it makes sense to broaden the topics available for discussion. Not necessarily just the old consoles, but there are now PS movies and TV, and news from the various studios, etc that don't fall neatly under PS5. When PS6 comes along we (the mods) will likely have to build from scratch again. Moving to a larger umbrella now ensures that, while we can still make c/ps6, we won't have to. We can still make and use PS5 and PS6 communities, but for onboarding more users and centralizing the ones we already have, moving focus to c/PlayStation makes sense at this time IMO.

Ultimately though, it's not going to be our (the mods) decision. I've put it up for a vote for the community to decide in a pinned post
