Coppola was originally going to just produce Apocalypse Now! And wanted George Lucas to direct. He chose to do Star Wars instead because he wanted to do something based in his own creation more or less. He was the first choice to direct Apocalypse Now! by the guy who made Apocalypse Now! Georgie ain't dumb and at the time had a pretty radical streak to him and was VERY pissed off at thr Vietnam War when it was happening. He knew what he was doing.

It broke George's heart not to direct Apocalypse Now!. It was a passion project and something important he wanted to make and leave him mark on, but he just couldn't make it work. Hell he had heart problems towards the end of Star Wars' production cause of stress and as early as scripting was tearing his hair out. Probably saved his life given how bad the production turned out. I remember Coppola refused to speak to George for a year because he left him to do AN on his own.
