  3. Avoid politics
    • 3.1) NEW RULE as of 5 Nov 2024, trying it out
    • 3.2) Political posts often end up being circle jerks (not offering unique perspective) or enflaming (too much work for mods).

I'm tired about reading about reddit here.

We left. Let's move on.

I don’t mean to be rude OP, but your entire contribution to lemmy has been 5 comments and this single post about Reddit. In order to gain traction as a viable alternative to Reddit we need OC and active participation in the comment section. Be the change you want to see and lead by example - start posting interesting non-Reddit related stuff yourself. The more people that do, the better lemmy will be.

I think we need to start poaching video content from reddit and posting it here. Stuff like HoldMyBeer, StartledCats, etc. There's so much content for the taking, I don't think we should get stuck on OC. In this stage we just need content. I'm seriously considering starting a cat sub or holdmybeer sub, and stealing all the content from reddit until people starting posting their own contributions.

One should stress that it should be good content though. One of our strengths at this time is the reduced number of bots and more active contributors.

There is plenty of content out there however, and I started sharing some of my favorite links with the smaller communities. Doing my part.

Good and new, I'm tired of seeing all the top of r/all memes having so much traction here. That was my pet peeve on Reddit. The ENDLESS recycling of the same content.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Sort by Top on Reddit, and start whackin' 'em 'ere.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I agree. I should have said “make new posts” rather than OC. When I first joined I used my last days of Apollo access to copy over a few of my favourite BORU posts as the community was otherwise empty. I also started c/[email protected] and reposted some of the old classics to get the community started. I don’t think lemmy should just be Reddit on another site, but it’s a good place to start while we build the site up.

It's becoming clear to me that getting a picture or video community off the ground that is not just memes might be difficult, and will take a pretty large userbase to sustain. But I think with something like Stealth app, as long as it continues to allow downloading from reddit, it should be easy for moderators to source video content themselves for the time being.

I've got a collection of porn from there if anyone needs it

Boost had a download function.. before those bastards killed it I had a pretty decent catalog of titties.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm personally going to stay away from sharing porn. Feels iffy without explicit consent.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Strongly agree.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'm with you, honestly how do you think that content got to reddit in the first place? Sure there's some original content there but 99% of the site is just reposts people got from other sites - and porn. Bring some porn back with you if you have space

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Let me know when you do so I can subscribe to your stream of silliness and entertainment :)

Yeah, the bitching about people bitching about Reddit is far more annoying than just the bitching about Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Agreed, it's also just a very Reddit poster thing to do ironically.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, ironically this whole post reminds me of that place

Maybe they're a plant sent from redshit to lower participation by reducing our current favorite topic which is: fuck redshit

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Opening up a new subreddit in the past few years had like a 50% chance of having 4 out of the top 10 posts people obnoxiously whining about X: "Please can we stop posting about X","Will the mods please start removing X posts?", "If something doesn't change soon, I'm going to start a new subreddit and the first rule will be 'No X'".

Meanwhile there are zero posts about X in sight.

It reminds me of the occasional times where a corporate email would be sent out improperly to "all" in our company. A few people would reply all: "take me off this list". Then someone would reply all to those guys: "don't reply all". Then other people would reply all:"you are spamming the whole company!", etc.

It would take an hour or so to die off, but It was kind of amusing to see people react to the chaos. I assume the bitching about Reddit will die off naturally.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It will. It's still very new, of course people will be talking about it for a while.

I hear you don't like bitching about bitching about Reddit

So here's some bitching about bitching about bitching about Reddit

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Likewise- this is literally another reddit post....

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The OP is complaining about all the Reddit bitching on his front page. There is some control over the looks of one's front page in profile settings. If set to "All", then yeah there's going to be a lot of stuff outside of interest on the front page. My front page is set to "Subscribed" so I have to intentionally look for that stuff if I want to see it.

The way to use Lemmy is to subscribe to communities with content of interest and use the the subscribed view. Maybe this is more a case of someone new to Lemmy not understanding the best way to use Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Can I see most posts being from the communities I have subscribed at while still introducing stuff from communities I haven't signed up for?

Seeing new stuff usually is good in life =)

Making a post that blows up like this one was a thing on reedit. You got a score and that encouraged gaming/trolling. It'll take a bit to realize that karma isn't a thing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I tried to give OP the benefit of the doubt by providing practical ways he could make a positive impact if he was being genuine, but I think I was being naïve. He’d been on lemmy for the best part of a week before he posted this. No way in hell he hadn’t come across the many posts complaining about the same thing. Plus his reply to me was very Reddit-like. Passive aggressive at best, antagonistic at worst. I’d become used to people being a little nicer and more genuine in the few weeks I’ve been here!

There something I don’t really understand about karma vs plain upvotes on lemmy. I know you needed a certain amount of karma to post in some subs, but it was never very much from what I recall. After you’d reached 2k at most, it didn’t have any value beyond social validation. Karma farmers didn’t do it for any real benefit, it just made them feel good. Won’t lemmy upvotes just be the same? You still get an upvote tally on your profile, you still get the dopamine boost from a thousand of people agreeing with you. Why do we assume (and hope) that karma/point farming won’t continue on this platform?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The Karma was your reddit score a way to rank your seniority and value. It made it a bit easier to see where someone stood in a specific community.A post from a throwaway account was more suspect than one with lots of karma.

Point farming will be a thing, people crave attention and you can get that validation . Without that overall score I think it will be less pronounced on lemmy. I have been shocked with the reasonableness of posters here on lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I just went to check what my karma was. On my first main account I had 30k karma after 10 years. The account I was using when I left was 8 years old and only had 3k karma. I definitely didn’t have any seniority or value! 😂

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

You trying to guilt people into generating content? Lol.

This isn’t a job. This is for leisure. No one should force it.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I joined 4 days ago. I have contributed to HFY mostly, until this.

I haven't done much, because I wanted to get a feel for the community.

Is it ok that I contribute now?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

No need to get arsey, I wasn’t being rude to you. I simply pointed out, politely, that we can each make lemmy better by posting content we find interesting. Posting to complain about people posting to complain about Reddit, not only doesn’t help matters, it actively makes it worse. And clearly I’m not alone in this sentiment. I look forward to seeing your contributions now you have a feel for the place and have got your little rant off your chest 💚
