Loading CD-ROMs into a cartridge before putting them in the computer
DVD-RAM!
Nope, before that. In the early days, CD drives came with a caddy to load the disc into. I'm not sure why, maybe it made for a simpler mechanism.
Yeah but DVD-RAM made it colorful and transparent and cool. The iMac of ancient failed storage technologies!
Had to do that with our 68k Mac with an external drive, yeah! 700MB CDs were amazing compared to the piddling 80MB internal hard disc. Being able to put so much stuff on one piece of removable media relative to what would fit in onboard storage had a big impact on how developers approached the platform.
If optical disc tech had kept up that differential until today we'd have 100-terabyte BluRays. Funny to think how that sort of capacity might change the way we use computers...
I had a friend who's dad was an engineer from France. They had a laser disc rom on their computer it was wild. We just played Scorched Earth.
That didnt last very long at all, though.. Thankfully.
