My lifestyle is so attuned to that of my dogs I sometimes feel our identities are fused

My husband and I used to adopt senior dogs to give them a few good years. We are currently taking a break and raising 2 younger dogs, but after these two are gone, we will go back to adopting grey muzzles.

It hurts when each one goes. Our vet has see us cry our hearts out 5 times in the last 8 years. The way I see it, I have dog-shaped holes in my chest. And there are old dogs who need love stuck in shelters. So I just fill the holes… with dogs. Over and over again.

I've had other pets my whole life growing up, but I have never cared about or for anything as much as I do my dogs (first dogs I've ever had). I've trained them not have separation anxiety, but how do I train myself to not have it when away from them? 🥺
