I hope the writing is better than 3's.

Imagine if it was worse. "Somehow, Troy Calypso returned"

Honestly he'd be a much more interesting villain than Tyreen.

Think about it; he's been put down his whole life by his sister, has those crazy siren leech powers, the prosthetic arm, and a following of rabid fans willing to do whatever he says.

He could totally be a viable and interesting villain.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I was disappointed that he didn't pull a heel-face turn in 3 because of all the abuse he received. I'd have him try and leech all of his sister's power to kill her even if it ended up killing him as well due to power overload. The leeching wouldn't kill her but it'd be enough for the vault hunters to have a chance to finish her off.

He honestly could have been the anti-Handsome Jack. Where Jack wanted order and control at all costs, the twins just wanted power and to kill anyone who stood up to them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah his death (if I remember right) was when I realised that, yes, they have completely fucked this entire story up. He could've been interesting but they such with the utter shite that was tyreen.

I played Borderlands 2 for quite a while, 1200 hours +, 100% on Steam. Some of the best gaming moments in my life fighting Vermivorous the Invincible with 3 friends. What came after in the franchise was just disappointing to me.

I don't understand why everyone likes 2 so much. Borderlands 1 had the real dystopian Mad Max vibes. And there was Claptrap for some comic relief.

Borderlands 2 started making a comical relief character out of everything. Bandits were clowns. All the bosses were clowns. All major NPC's were clowns... The entire "dystopia" went out of the window and Borderlands 2 turned Mad Max into a slapstick comedy.

Just the intros of the two games show the massive difference. There is no "survive the wasteland" anymore.

Intro 1

Intro 2

IMO:
1 had the best vibes and the best gear scaling
2 had the best villain and boss fights
3 had the most fun character abilities.

A huge part of the problem is it becoming a classic heros vs villains story. It was way better when we were just mercenaries in it for ourselves.

Which abilities did you like? I found some nice but many were a bit overpowered. But maybe that's because I selected ~~Brick~~ Salvadore in Borderlands2. The dual wield button practically destroyed everything. They also had so much power that the unique guns (which was the original selling point for Borderlands) felt less impactful.

Honestly the lack of balance is what I appreciated, throwing drones or skags at people or summoning a mech and firing off a huge volley of homing missiles. Given the series was already flanderized by BL2 it was nice to have more unique powers; though the timing of them felt a bit nasty as they were too frequent to be worth saving but had enough cooldown to be annoying in a tight spot. I think a good balance in future would be impactful powers with a much longer cooldown or some kind of conditional trigger that keeps guns the main focus.

Brick wasn't playable in BL2, but I'm assuming you mean Salvadore

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

You are correct. I confused the berserker class with the berserker.

I played the shit out of 2 as well. When 3 came along it had literally all of the improvements I wanted to see, and it felt so much better to boot, but the core gameplay had grown stale because of how much time I spent in the second

After 3, Wonderlands, and New Tales I can't say I'm particularly excited.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago

The writing in 3 was... not great (the DLCs were amazing) but man the gameplay is unparalleled. If they could just do a villain that rivals jack again, maybe this could be something decent.

... unrelated, anyone wanna buy a bridge?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wdym "New Tales"? They made a follow up to Tales From The Borderlands? Because that game was amazing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yes, there's a game called "New Tales From The Borderlands". It's generally regarded as pretty bad, and is in no way a worthy followup to the original.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 months ago (2 children)

After 3 and Wonderlands, I'm not interested. Maybe if it goes to 75% off or something (which was my policy after seeing reviews of 3 and Pitchford's ... Pitchfordity)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I liked Wonderlands, even though it felt a bit short and wasn't really as funny or gritty as the first two.

Since BL 3, it's felt like the games devolved into a very childish humor, not in a clever way, but just an unfunny way.

Like, I know the first two games weren't the peak of intelligent humor, but at least it felt they were intentional about how they utilized less mature jokes.

And the gameplay and stories haven't been as good since BL2. Handsome Jack really stole the game in the best way.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The thing about Borderlands 1 and 2 is that their humor fit in very well for their time. They existed through the peak “lol so random” phase of internet humor. That exact same humor, executed with less subtlety, in 2020’s just does not fit in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My biggest issue with wonderlands was numerous, frustrating bugs. Sure, you made this game during Corona and lockdown, at least in part, and did great for everyone being remote. Why the fuck did you not fix the bugs when you got back? Time to release a DLC and such? Sure. Bugs? Nah. I forget what they were at this point, but remember being super frustrated a number of times.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

And the DLC though was absolute garbage. I had paid for the season pass and it felt like they released a bunch of stuff that should have been free.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Maybe Valve is on to something with not counting to 3.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago

Nope. Fuck you, Randy.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Hopefully 4 won't be an epic exclusive at launch.

Since the consensus is that Borderlands is now a dead franchise, anyone know of any alternatives? I enjoy Roboquest, but it doesn't quite scratch the same itch (minus the artstyle). Gunfire Reborn seems closer to Borderlands, so I'll check it out eventually.

I would recommend Everspace 2. It's quite a different game, it's a space dogfighter first and foremost... But it's also somewhat a light RPG looter shooter. It's great, and still recieving updates (slowly).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I rather liked the first Everspace but the second was a slog for me. To put it briefly, it seemed to missing the best parts of the first.

The story was kind of dull, not that the firsts was very substantial but to me the story in 1 was moreso the emergent events & situations that would happen along the way.

It might be that I'm just getting burnt out on RPGs but having to keep replacing gear for marginal stat boosts with few interesting differences got old quick. That and enemy levels were all over the place (the first time I had to fight an Okkar Corvette I melted it in roughly 2 seconds without doing anything special). The different ship classes & their unique abilities were pretty neat though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I mean if you don't like replacing gear for similar stuff with better stats I don't think looter shooters are for you haha! The story is pretty basic but I do enjoy the random dialogue you get when just flying about once you've unlocked HIVE

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

You could try Warframe. It has its own issues but the game is incredibly healthy despite the monetization. I've spent $30 total on the game despite playing nearly all of the content in it.

“We know everyone loves billionaires, so now there are a billion billion guns! And all the guns do over a billion damage!!” Idk why but I just get the sense they’ll make that kind of joke here

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Really not looking forward to it, even though I've played every other game including Tiny Tina's. They really dropped the ball with the Wonderlands DLC, they undid any and all trust I had in their post-release expansions, so they are really going to have to be announcing some ground-breaking new features if they want me to pay on release. Otherwise, I guess I'll be playing it in 2028 when it's discounted, if the state of the world allows it.

I can look past not having iconic villains, as much DLC, or having new releases that are just minor upgrades, but the drop in the expectations for post-release quality, I guess that's where I draw the line, no pre-orders from me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Pretty stoked for this myself tbh. I enjoyed all their previous entries, lumps and all.
