Personally, I think it would be ideal to have one to two instance left wing trolls. If you don’t want to deal with them, you can block them but I think that having 1 to 2 instance trolls or just allowing trolls in general could help drive traffic here and make the place fun especially if you do not take their bullshit too seriously. There is always the risk that they Do a mass rush though. But at least we would get to talk shit to an actual person.

Thanks for all the feedback on this topic.

My view is people left, right, or otherwise are more then welcome to post, debate, and discuss in good faith at Exploding Heads. It makes all our lives richer.

Trolls who hurl personal insults and assign false motivations are not welcome.

I think @[email protected] said it well.

I am prepared to allow you to operate under a different set of rules in the two Dank Microwave communities, but outside of those communities people follow the standard rules.

Child porn is never acceptable.

I am going to leave down votes enabled as I think a down vote is much better then an insult.

I do not think you should have to provide an email address to give an opinion (this is my strong personal belief), but the cost of that belief is we may get more trolls who take advantage. On balance I would prefer to ban trolls then force perfectly good people to hand over their email address.

I apologize to any of you that suffered insults from trolls. My natural motivation to let people have their say allowed these trolls to take advantage and insult some of you. Sorry.

Please report trolls, I will check their history and ban as appropriate.

The way to handle "misinformation" or "disinformation" is to post a reply explaining why you disagree.

You all have the power in your personal profile to block instances, communities, and people from your personal feed. If you do not know how to do this, just say so and we will show you.

Our active monthly local users has grown 5 fold in the last month and there are a lot more who look but do not interact. You all should be very proud that people like the communities you are building and hanging out with you.

I think it's easy to distinguish between insults and honest differences of opinion. Block or ban the personal insulters and tell the persons who have differing opinions why they're wrong.

I think we should allow them here unless they are very uncivil, obvious bad actors, you know the type. The kind that only post insults and never participate in good faith. Everyone should be allowed a voice even if they only use it to say opinions I disagree with.

This site should welcome open discussion. It makes things interesting.

Honestly some stuff they post is actually interesting. The problem is that that almost any guy walking in here is discussing in bad faith.

Like you can call me a nazi, racist whatever and post articles but when there is a rebuttal to the article in question I expect OP to come to the comments to explain why they thought it was a good article.

Just dumping some incorrect articles and thinking "I le epically troled" is just regarded and should be met with a ban.

Talking about these folks https://exploding-heads.com/u/Duff

Dumps regarded articles and doesnt respond when he knows he is wrong. Unless this lazy fucker sleeps for 19 hours. Thats also a possibility.

I think you should just fuck with them, let them stay as long as they stay entertaining to you or provide a serious discussion. The moment they turn lame or start spamming whack them out. Let them waste their time.

I say

  • don't ban anyone who doesn't violate the very rules we follow
  • probably disable down votes. Down votes are never that great anyway.

I like down votes, so long as they don't actually affect anything.

I dislike downvotes as a moderation method; love it as an opinion poll.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah I see what you mean but we do end up with tons of stuff just being downvoted without as much relative input from people

If I see 20 downvotes and zero comments I feel like it's just outside trolls

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Well let's start by not making a big drama out of them whenever they appear. I would say that your reaction to trolls the last time wasn't very good. You made several posts replying to them which made them think that they triggered you. In the future when trolls appear just ban them

  • Complains that regular instances want to defederate them

  • Wants to defederate other instances

🤣

I don't care that much. I only get frustrated if I'm trying to message you guys and they are posting from a million alts cluttering my free. Down votes do become meaningless if to many bots are here and the bot problem is getting bad at Lemmy. I suggest you guys keep email verification on most the time if it's working.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ban all instances of course!

[–] [email protected] -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If we allow trolls we should disable downvoting

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why that? What’s so bad about a downvote? The amount of votes does not make an argument right or wrong. It just shows a groups tendencies towards an opinion.

Or am I missing something?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It pushes posts down the hot list

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I regularly check the new list. Seldom if ever use the hot list.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

yeah, the hot list is useless. i use the new, it has an order i understand

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Didn’t think of this one. But since I am rather new on this Instance, how many lefties are actively trying to manipulate this instance?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Exact number, not sure
