I was told that the news megathread was intended to protect the sharing of smaller news stories that the hexbear algorithm normally crush. Mods even said that chatter in the news mega thread was supposed to end so that lesser news would be more visible.

A big news story happens and the whole front page has threads that people can talk in about it. So I go to the news megathread to see other stories and also people are flooding the mega thread which is intended to preserve visibility of less visible stories. That does not make sense. How is anyone supposed to see other news stories from today? (or the last 5 days)

Converting the weekly new megathread into another "trump got shot" thread killed the visibility of every lesser news story of the past 5 days. Why was the story not made into a separate megathread?

I agree we should have had a mega thread on the shooting

This week, the same thing was done. The news megathread was converted to a Biden drops out megathread and it buried the visibility of news discussion from the past 7 days. Now you have to scroll through many, many pages of Biden drops out comments to see any small stories from the past week in the news megathread.

It does not make sense to keep converting the weekly megathread into "current big story thread". It buries the other stories of the week.

This also goes against the principles of a link aggregation website. The hexbear post algorithm is largely driven by the number of comments made on a post. When user make opinion comments in the megathread instead of relevant individual news posts, it takes away momentum from other posts relevant to current events.
