Two months ago we found out my wife has stage 4 cancer and we had two months of multiple Dr appointments to do procedures and testing. When I brought it up to my boss I was told I could take all the time that I needed and not to worry. I took all my sick time and some of my PTO but had to still catch up on my work load because it wasn’t really covered by anyone. I haven’t been given any warnings or write ups the two years I’ve been working here. In fact my performance reviews have been flawless. It’s been a really toxic environment and more so dealing with my wife’s diagnosis, but it pays the bills for now. Seeing that I will be getting PIP soon came with a bit of a shock because I had no idea they were not happy with my performance. They have no idea that I know but I’m not sure what my next step should be. I could definitely use a break from work but only if I can collect unemployment. To spend time with my wife which we are also dealing with day 8 of no power after hurricane Beryl. Does anyone have advice on how I can best handle this situation? I’m going to do my own research as well but thought I could use this platform for any other advice. Both positive and negative will be appreciated.
