Anyone here use an X230 with the quad-core mod? I'm looking into it and was wondering about the reliability and battery life compared to the stock i5-3320M.

I had the 3612QE with a 9 cell, maybe an hour or two off the usual battery life if you're not doing anything crazy. Would definitely recommend it over the 3615QE since it runs cooler!

@pastermil X230 had it for a long time. But you have to do a BGA rework, 'cause CPU is not socketed like on T-series of that era.

I mean... I'm aware it's possible in theory. Just never thought somebody actually doing BGA rework for laptop upgrade.

They sell finished motherboards with the upgrade on eBay and Aliexpress. Nothing newer than Ivy Bridge though.

Depends on what you're doing with the machine really. Full blast load will be about the same battery life since it will be limited by the 35 watt TDP (assuming you get a sane CPU). But idle and low to mid loads expect 1-3 watts more usage any any given time.

It's been a long ass time since I looked into it, but dual core vs quad core in my sandy bridge T420 got me like 6 vs 7 hours of battery life. But that was also like 10 years ago and the internet is far more intensive these days so I'd expect a much bigger hit.

I always stop charching st 85 and resume charging at 65 to increase the batter lifetime.

even with that I get at least a feature film duration.

Is that with the 3612QE or the 3615QE?
