Yeah, I can't help but remember being pushed very hard into a pool as a prank and that feeling of panic. Or, if you have ever been swimming in a lake or pond and felt something brush your leg, there's a primal flee/fight. Everett is a big boned dude and can't move away quickly. He couldn't help it that the dude slipped under his gunboats for feet.
