The European Commission has today designated, for the first time, six gatekeepers - Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, Microsoft - under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In total, 22 core platform services provided by gatekeepers have been designated. The six gatekeepers will now have six months to ensure full compliance with the DMA obligations for each of their designated core platform services.

Example of the “don'ts” - Gatekeeper platforms may no longer:

prevent users from un-installing any pre-installed software or app if they wish so

N-IICS (aka messaging services): WhatsApp, Messenger
Intermediation: Google Maps, Google Play, Google Shopping, Amazon Marketplace, Apple’s App Store, Meta Marketplace
Video Sharing: YouTube
Advertising services: Google, Amazon, Meta
Web Browsers: Chrome, Safari
Search: Google Search
Operating Systems: Android, iOS, Windows

TikTok is truly a gatekeeper service on par with Facebook and Google. Whatever will people do without their tiktokthots?
