What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

New Netflix original starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, and Ke Huy Quan and the trailer has a slowed-down rock song. Perfect recipe for success, right??

I'll admit I don't know anything about The Electric State but I guess it's based on a graphic novel. From this trailer, it looks mostly post-apocalyptic but there's a shot of people wearing VR helmets so who knows, maybe there's some cyberpunk buried in there too.

Before I read your description OP, I watched the trailer and thought "this looks heavily based on Simon Stalenhag's art", and sure enough he is the author of the work this movie is adapted from.

Simon Stalenhag's art is a surrealist dystopian style that sometimes incorporates elements of Americana. I'd describe a good number of his pieces as cyberpunk, but there's usually a certain anachronism to it, where it places these really dystopian sorts of high-tech aesthetics in the middle of otherwise mundane environments. Definitely not the neon and chrome sort of cyberpunk style we might otherwise think of.

Edit: here's his website which has more art samples.

I agree, his work is somewhat post-cyberpunk / alternative history / retro futurism. Looking at humanity as we regress back to our state pre mass proliferation of robotics AI, etc. I wouldn’t call it post apocalypse since the world seems better in this post state. Love his work immensely and I’ve gifted way too many copies of his books to family and friends.

I'm so happy for Simon. His random Gen-X nostalgia artwork has so far led to three TTRPGs one mini-series and this movie. I'm sure more stuff i am not aware of.

I really liked Tales From The Loop, too

Thanks for the tip. I've added it to my watchlist.

Yeah. I think cyberpunk went mainstream sometime after Facebook won the friend network wars. Nobody noticed because the mirror shades are optional, but the dystopian bits are becoming mandatory.

Lately it feels like the definition of the cyberpunk keeps expanding. It has some elements from the trailer like VR helmets and a shot of the evil CEO, but the general vibe feels more like post-cyberpunk.
