A time bomb in the house? That's not a good analogy, I think a better one is fire. We lit a fire in our house and half the people living in it have decided that the fire is actually a good thing for our house, since they might want to make some smores later. Meanwhile, we all just stand there watching as the fire grows larger and larger.

I've come to the conclusion that our species won't grow up and do the right, sane, morally decent thing but will instead clutch to their sports, their nascar, their political delusions because you can't convince children to abandon their toys, and those toys make so many people so much money that we're gonna cook. Miserably. And when the mobs rally and decide who to attack, they'll come after the scientists who did nothing except warn, and warn and warn and warn for 50 years, costing them their careers and mental health trying to get the world to listen.

Because the angry mobs won't admit their apathy and capricious reasoning (what can I do/it's a scam/burning fuel for fun can't hurt anyone) and want to punish someone.

And the petroleum companies will have guarded gates, while the universities will be open.

In theory I agree.

In practice, I can't exactly conduct controlled demolition on entire industries by myself and organizing in any meaningful way gets me alphabet squaded.

What we need us for everyone to get fed up with it at the exact same time and grab the pitchforks and guillotines.
