Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

Saying non credible af here, but in theory one could add a upwards facing shotgun shells on top of the helmet, triggered by a Camera/proximity sensor if it detects a drone/falling grande. Maybe add a gyroscope to check if the helmet is actually facing upwards before triggering. All in all unit cost could be below 250$

  • 6x 12 gauge shells with bird shot
  • Raspberry pi type controller
  • USB cam
  • Laser distance sensor
  • gyroscope
  • servo trigger

I had no idea what I was looking at, so I thought it was a disco ball to confuse light-based sensors and cameras.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's about equally as effective.

Sure thing. Bundle it with a gift certificate for a chiropractor. Also, wouldn't expended bird shot come raining down on the helmet wearer?

Clearly the back pain is not service related and should not be covered.

Anecdote time, feel free to SKIP

My buddy's humvee got tagged by an rpg during desert storm, everyone inside lived but most were injured. He got away with shrapnel embedded in his arm for most of the next two or three days until it all got removed. Apparently his elbow got it pretty bad.

Fast forward to 98, he's basically lost feeling in two of his fingers except hot/cold and pressure. "it's not service related"

2005, most of his hand is partially numb. "it's not service related"

2013, he has no feeling below the elbow, except sharp pain and extreme hot/cold. "it's not service related"

2015, he has deadeend feeling from his shoulder to his elbow. "it's not service related."

2017, he has difficulty moving his hand now unless he's looking at it. Spatial awareness is gone. Elbow down completely numb. Shoulder down almost completely numb.

2017, two months later, for seemingly no reason. "It's service related. You're on 100% disability. You have 24 hours to quit your job."

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Did he quit his job? And what became of him?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

He convinced his doctor to "wait a couple days to inform" him so he could give a few days notice. This was less than a week into his new promotion, too.

Now he spends his days trapping for muskrat (big problem for farmers in the area) and ~~sells the furs for supplemental income because disability pays shit~~ has hobbies.

He seemed to be doing okay last time I spoke to him. Just a little bored when he can't get outside.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I hope he finds more hobbies that definitely don't bring him clean stacks of cash, just joy and satisfaction. (Wink) Was he able to get any treatment that helped with mobility? He needs that arm in the war against muskrats, right...

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He DID seem to be moving it around better, it's a bit of a sore topic for him so I never pried, just listened to him when he talked about it. Didn't want to just go "so, is your arm still shit?"

Like it was noticeably not good when he quit, and the last time I saw him he was moving it pretty much as well as the first time I met him.

So I'm guessing him going back out and doing stuff with his hands more is helping a lot.

My wife has mobility issues with one of her arms due to injury, and she gets better mobility the more she does complex things with her hands.

Protip: if you ever get an injury that limits hand/arm movements, take up knitting, tabletop gaming, and/or video games. Moving your hands around small objects to do delicate things can vastly improve your dexterity.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Glad to hear that it's not as hopeless as I imagined for people with nerve damage, in spite of the VA's best efforts. Thanks for the protip.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

2025 the VA is legislated out of existence. No replacement is ever proposed. Fuck our service.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Potentially, but at that point it probably would have lost its lethal velocity, so the worst that could happen is it gets stuck in your hair or falls into your shirt or something.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah but like.... That's mildly irritating.

Life would never be the same.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Like hot .22 down one's shirt collar. Simply no.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

There's also falling drone

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 weeks ago

Bird shot doesn't hurt when it falls on you, unless it gets in your eye. The recoil from the shot might be enough to cause serious neck damage.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Drone dropped munitions rarely land directly on a soldiers head; rather they land nearby and injure surrounding soldiers with the blast/fragmentation. Without some sort of active aim, this thing will almost never hit, if it even triggers.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

ok throw in 20$ more for 2 servos to gumball the thing in the right direction

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Let's kick it up a notch and get Raytheon working on a helmet-mounted Phalanx that fires .22LR. The old farts at the trap & skeet range are gonna be in for a surprise when I show up with that bad boy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Why not just have a drone detection and alert system, integrate it with the new HUD they're working on to point to it, and have the soldier shoot the demon bird himself?

Might want to get automatic shotguns like the AA-12 out there to desperately pepper the bastards.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

They don't have rules in place for that! The range officer might swallow his dip.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Load it with Dragon's Breath shells and add a manual trigger, and it becomes the latest craze for New Year's parties!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Pickelhaube 2.0

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I feel like just having a designated drone spotter/shooter in a squad would be more effective than this.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You need to MIC that shit up, there is no way our districts can profit off that.

Stick a multi strategy drone detector on an MRAP and pair it with an automated proprietary small bore shotgun chaingun. Like a baby Phalanx that shoots .4 bore.

It will take some time before it stops shooting birds, but all that can be taken care of in future iterations that require retrofitting that is not covered by the maintenance contract.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

the birds thing is a feature, high protein snack precooked via tracer

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

My in laws have a pigeon problem.

Can I borrow the prototype?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Too credible

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

in theory one could add a upwards facing shotgun shells on top of the helmet

Seems like a recipe for neck problems and neck-related fatalities

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

You leave behind a crate of these with manuals for the enemy to find when you move positions.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Shotguns ain't that powerful, what are we going to stick 2ga brass slugs up there?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Imagine just being on watch and your anti-drone helmet goes off every so often, compound it with being entirely desensitized to your reality.

[–] mynamesnotrick 5 points 2 weeks ago

American defense contractors... 💰💰 💰

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I feel like the physics behind attaching shotgun shells to your helmet with the intention of shooting down drones would break your neck.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just attach downwards facing blanks that trigger at the same time.
Checkmate physics

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

credible solution right there

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

With no barrel to really direct the velocity, wouldn't it be more like attaching a tiny grenade or firecracker than a bullet? In that case the kickback force would be less than out of a regular rifle since the blast velocity is distributed in a radius and not in a singular direction.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Edit: maybe switch that laser distance sensor for a Ultrasonic one, since ultrasonic dosent show up as bright flickering dots in night vision....

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

The real deal use radar/lidar sensors, so you can replace the whole sensor suite with 4 90-degree sensors facing upwards with the added benefit of being able to track not just range but speed and trajectory.

Slap the computer on the back of the helmet, and it'll even work as a counterweight for the night vision goggles!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

Just give all the soldiers baseball bats and they can whack the grenades back to the enemy. We need to play to American strength

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Just seems like ERA with extra steps

This looks like anti-ambush gizmos bolted to the sides of trucks in Vietnam. One-up this and put a quarter of claymore there instead
