Maybe because I heard the different variation first, but I like the punchline “…they hit the second tower” a bit more

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

In the one I saw they said "the south tower" instead of second, but I might be stupid

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Those two things don't seem related, but I might need new glasses

As a reminder, while we try to "never forget" 9/11, we tend to "kick the can down the road" regarding issues of society, civil rights, and other systemic racism issues.

it was a Tuesday on September 11, 1973, 50 years ago now, when the CIA helped the bloodthirsty dictator Pinochet in his military coup against a democratically elected president, Allende, causing more than 3,000 fatalities in Chile. Yes, it is worth remembering it.

Round about 2005 I was at a Hooter's with some friends and I noticed that their hottest wing sauce was named "911". As a joke, when our waitress brought out our food I pointed to that on the menu and said that I was offended that Hooter's would think to name a wing sauce after the attack on the Twin Towers, which I referred to as our "sacred tragedy". I figured she would just laugh it off but instead she got wide-eyed and said "oh no no no no no" and ran off to bring over her manager. The guy came over to our table and apologized profusely, saying that it was named after 911 the emergency call number and not 9/11 the terrorist attack. He comped our entire meal (over $100) and gave me four $50 Hooter's gift certificates as well. At this point I was afraid to say I'd just been kidding so I rolled with it. I still have those gift certificates somewhere - I didn't avoid using them out of guilt, Hooter's is just terrible food.

So you could really say hooters is the 9/11 of meals

There's an old diss where you make fun of someone by saying "year called, they want their style back". This comic is riffing off of that idea by referring to 2001, when the world trade center in New York City was destroyed in a terrorist attack on September 11th

Man, I really never considered this being an “older” brand of humor. This has been in my saved folder for a long time, it’s a lot about the guy’s face and glasses and that he’s using an old phone to call 2001—and that was all on top of the existing joke. I feel old today.

Regular Show used the joke in one of their episodes, referring to the 80s..which itself aired over a decade ago. So yeah, it's pretty much in boomer humor territory now.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

It's news to me the 80's were actually just the years between 1946 and 1964.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago

Not really. I mean, I get what you maybe meant, but “boomer humor” is a specific type of humor. If anything, it’s millennial humor, which is literally a different generation of humor. But I’m also pretty sure this was made in the last 5 or so years, still making it gen Z humor? I dunno. I find myself asking “is this joke as stupid as it seems, or is there a level I’m not getting” and the answer is always, “no, take it at face value.”

[-] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

The 2000s called. They want their joke back.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

1986 called

Holy shit something happened to the space shuttle

Why didn't the crew of the Challenger take showers before they launched?
Because they figured they would wash up on the beach.

"[year] called" is a common way to mock outdated objects or behaviours. It's usally followed by "...they want their [mocked thing] back". In this case, it's about the clothes of the guy.

The punchline is, instead of mocking him, he's telling him about a major event of 2001 - the 9/11 terrorist attack. It could imply an actual call through time, but that's not important. The comic basically just wants to subvert your expectations and drops something dark instead of the usual punchline.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

People say shit like "2001 called" when somebody is wearing something outdated or doing something outdated. The September 11 terrorist attacks happened in 2001.

Wow Imgur is trash, now, huh? Does all of the “make this site shitty so they’ll use our app” shit now

[-] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Dude it’s been like that for a while.

Ironically, Imgur was created by a redditor and gained its fame as the de facto image hosted for reddit for years before it tried to become its own social media site.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

How is that ironic?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Interesting, this opened on Imgur for you? I uploaded directly to Memmy, so as far as I can tell, the entire post is hosted in-app. Curious. Are you using an app? Or are you on desktop? (Or just using a mobile browser?).

Because, yes, Imgur fuckin sucks. From what I understand they’re terrible about privacy now too. We’ve now been users long enough to watch it go from a great little image hosting site to apparently a tech corp.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

My app does embed your image, but opening in external or just looking at the host thingy on the Lemmy website shows that it is uploaded to Imgur. May be something Memmy does automatically?
