Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

Jacobo Árbenz, born on this day in 1913, was a Guatemalan President who earned the ire of the United Fruit Company, the largest private landowner in the country, by instituting widespread land reforms. He was ousted in a U.S-backed coup in 1954.

Árbenz served as the Minister of National Defense from 1944 to 1951 and the second democratically elected President of Guatemala from 1951 to 1954. He was a major figure in the ten-year Guatemalan Revolution, which represented some of the few years of representative democracy in Guatemalan history.

Árbenz instituted many popular reforms, including an expanded right to vote, the right of workers to organize, legitimizing political parties, and allowing public debate.

The centerpiece of Árbenz' policy was an agrarian reform law, under which uncultivated portions of large land-holdings were expropriated in return for compensation and redistributed to poverty-stricken agricultural laborers. Approximately 500,000 people benefited from the decree, the majority of them indigenous people whose forebears had been dispossessed after the Spanish invasion.

Opposition to these policies led the United Fruit Company to lobby the U.S. government to have him overthrown. The U.S. was also concerned by the presence of communists in the Guatemalan government, and Árbenz was ousted in a coup d'état engineered by the U.S. government on June 27th, 1954.

"Our only crime consisted of decreeing our own laws and applying them to all without exception. Our crime is having enacted an agrarian reform which effected the interests of the United Fruit Company. Our crime is wanting to have our own route to the Atlantic, our own electric power and our own docks and ports. Our crime is our patriotic wish to advance, to progress, to win economic independence to match our political independence. We are condemned because we have given our peasant population land and rights."

I might just have to get transferred to a different department at work. 1+ month on and I don't feel over what happened between me and my former friend. plus she and her other work friend seem to have a targeted beef with me. I was chill with everyone else but now it seems like everyone is scared to be friendly/friends/to talk openly. This is just untenable for me. I wish I were better at compartmentalizing and just not giving a fuck but I am a teeny tiny softboy. Problem is - in a vacuum - my department is definitely the chillest and best to work in. If one or both of them bounced it would be tolerable but I have no idea when that'll happen.

So Mitski just dropped a country album and it slaps. She's course corrected since "Laurel Hell," and thank god. I don't think she'll ever make something as good as "Bury Me At Makeout Creek" ever again but at least she's still got it. I recommend it folks.

But God protects fools and drunks, and we were certainly both foolish and drunk much of the time.

is crack an arbitrary distinction? like its just coke, right? snorting coke kind of ruins my sinuses for a bit and i have hunch smoking it would be more pleasant, only if it doesn't totally change the characteristics of the high

Have you tried dextroamphetamine (Adderall)?

Crack is different to cocaine like Hash is different to weed. The process takes out impurities and gives you a pure cocaine crystal instead of cocaine hydrochloride. It hits harder and faster and also wears off sooner.

So I decided that I don't really like my housemate for reasons (he's not a dick but I digress). So since I decided that, and I'm pretty sure he's moving out in December, I either stay at my partner's place for like a week at a time, or I completely hole up in my room and avoid going out unless I can tell he's not in the common areas. I think a huge part of this is autistic burnout and he's ALWAYS HERE and I don't wanna engage but I get really weird and obsessive over behaving like this. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I WANT TO ENJOY MY HOMEEEEE

Going to my union's first proposal meeting to elect our bargaining committee tomorrow. This will be the first time that most of my comrades will meet our union rep, I"m stoked to finally bridge that gap.

Surprisingly, one of the anti-union members is going to go. I don't trust her and I think she's a fucking narc as she is very buddy buddy with the shitty "supervisor" who has been openly hostile to unionized departments... so I'm leery of her presence. But hopefully she may change her tune or feel way differently than she's suspecting!! I was just looking forward to shit talking on the union busters and possibly talking more openly about strikes with my coworkers who are afraid of that....sigh
