Short walk this morning and the first bird I encounter is this female Great Spotted Woodpecker.

@[email protected] brilliant shot! Lovely detail and much closer than I have managed to get to any woodpecker.
We followed the drumming through some woods at Minsmere a couple months ago to find them. Spotted them up an old dead tree, after some photos from a distance they disappeared.
@[email protected] this one was at my local reserve, but last week 2 woodpeckers turned up in the trees outside the front of my house, so I'm going to pop out and try and find them at some point this week..

@[email protected] Year I have another shot of the back of the head, and there's a small red square of feathers, not as large as an adult male but definitely there.
