The dollar and change personal frozen pizzas you get out of the frozen food isle look better than this garbo.

People who buy old MREs for camping (or even the civilian packaged equivalents) are suckers. The Humanitarian Daily Rations are both cheaper and tastier.

I used to get them for free (my scoutmaster was a quartermaster on the local base).

They genuinely aren’t bad. They genuinely aren’t good either though. IGN would give a 7.5/10

That rings a bell, faintly in the distance. Which review was memed on for that again?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

pokemon ruby/sapphire remakes iirc

Thank you, I thought gen 3 was known for too much water though?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

It's absolutely a fair criticism. People get mad because the games were themed around expanding the ocean and expanding the land and see it as justified that it had an equal amount of water and land routes. That thematically makes sense, but they did nothing to make the water routes as interesting as the land routes or to compensate for the fact that types weak to water got hosed for half the game. They should have varied the scenery on water routes, had aquatic Pokemon that weren't water type, and made the encounter tables as varied as they were on land.

Do other countries produce civilian rations like that too?

$4.75 isn't the cheapest way to get 2200 calories, but it's also not the worst ..

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

The Humanitarian Daily Rations

TIL never knew this were a thing.

Aren't MREs for when you're out shooting brown people and don't have a kitchen? I didn't think you got them at base anyway.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah when you're in the field. But that pizza looking gnarly.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm not sure how much better you could do then. Maybe they just shouldn't even try with pizza lol

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All of them should basically be some form of beans and rice with different seasonings, but the troops would be upset if every MRE was just beans and rice even if it tasted 1000x better than this.

Lentil curries would be good too

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Yea. It’s not even meant to be eaten all at once. Those shitty crackers and peanut butter pouch? That’s meant to go on a pocket until you’re rucking for miles and don’t have time for a proper refuel.

Taste, enjoyment, ect… all tertiary at most.

They are good at what they are meant to achieve though.

brit mres are pretty nice
though the sticky toffee pudding doubles as a sidearm

disclaimer: i'm a slut for biscuits, brown

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago

"i'm a slut for biscuits" would make a great t-shirt or bumper sticker

You guys must get the better stuff, our suckers and losers are eating dumpster pizza.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not that far off from the pizza they serve at schools.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And that's sad because I remember actual cooked school lunches, like real pizza by the slice and it was good. The worst food I ever had was in a psychward, found out later googling them they also serve prison food and had numerous violations against them. I'd take the MRE over that shit.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's like a handful of these vendors that serve places like schools, prisons, hospitals, etc. To my knowledge, they have different tiers - the cafeterias at the university I went to were probably one of the better ones (definitely better than my K-12), but they still sucked, had nearly no vegan or vegetarian options, and I remember losing a lot of weight back then. The stuff they serve at prisons and psychiatric wards must be abysmal.

I've seen smuggled pics from inside prisons where the food has bugs on it. In the psychward I remember getting served a cut of meat that was turning a blueish hue. Needless to say I always went with the grilled cheese option, at least that was fresh and cooked right.

When I was in the cadets we had many opportunities to eat mres. One of the best things was trading the bits you didn't want with other people. I ended up with so much Brussels pate.

Salmon paste was particularly unpopular, although I reckon I'd devour it these days. I'm like a dog, I'll eat anything, the more pungent the better.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago

yeah and frozen pizzas turn to rotten mush 24 hours without refrigeration; these things are supposed to not do that and as a result of turning what is essentially trail mix into pizza, it's gonna look and taste like actual shit

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

At least it isn't hardtack

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Salt pork, hard tack, boiled beans. Oh and scurvy. Now we're civil war reenacting.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You are forgetting plum duff on sundays

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I haven't seen the words "plum duff" since reading Treasure Island as a kid. Holy shit you unlocked a core memory.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

See it a lot in the master and commander books. It's like an even shitter Christmas pudding

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

There are other types of food America.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Even the less shitty mres still caused some bad constipation
