The problem with the franchise is the outdated tone has become burdened with cultural baggage. They need to find a way to reset that AND reinvigorate the gameplay. It might not even be possible, which is sad and not their fault really. Just... A lot of things have happened since BL1 came out. Personally, I don't see this project or that movie next year helping to fix it at all.
They need something somehow more homey and way less edgy, like a whacked out resource management game as Marcus, where you have to stock vendors, swoop loot from out in front of the vault hunters (short, time limited, to sell back to them), but also get groceries (maybe some hunting and resource collection), get home and make dinner for your family in a whacked out chef simulator or something. In-world, but somehow way off-brand.
