MODERATORS

Hey everybody,

Due to the bombardment of Elon Musk content, the mods have decided to make a pinned mega thread. Please post all of your Elon Musk related news, gossip, technology and articles here.

We know many of you are deeply interested in Elon Must, but we need to allow space for other technology content as well.

As always, be excellent to each other.

Yours truly, moderators.

Just what Lemmy needs, a thread that kills engagement because megathreads don't work. I know most of us don't have apps with keyword filters yet (lifesaver), but I'd much rather have too much of something than not enough while trying to grow a community. Annoying growing pains over ghost town any day.

My .02

Megathreads work on breaking news where users will want to constantly refresh. Topic megathreads never work. Not enough material is developing and no one knows when to check the megathread.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Completely fair distinction. Thanks

Make an Elon musk community

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This is the second tech community to do this in 2 days. The megathread in the other instance is already dead one day in. This stifles discussion, it does not just move it around.

To borrow from one of my comments over there: Nobody checks megathreads unless it’s an ongoing, high profile situation. I guarantee you this megathread is going to get essentially no engagement within 48 hours and now for some odd reason all news about SpaceX, Twitter, Tesla, and Musk, is functionally banned.

This is a terrible idea and I know every mod here knows this is functionally a ban.

With all due respect - how much discussion about Elon can there really be? Maybe a couple of substack posts here and there to get more insight but realistically it’s just the same thing over and over again. Special man got mad and has been throwing a years long temper tantrum- decimating a company in the process. I don’t think that’s gonna change and I’m pretty tired of seeing him clog up my feed.

Does anyone else genuinely think Twitter/X will die anytime soon with the latest changes Elmo is making?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

depends on your definition of “die”. it is not going to go offline, but it will certainly cease to be of any moderate utility to most people and will cease to have any meaningful cultural impact within a couple of years at this rate

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, even if it costs money to maintain, Elon will hang onto it. It's useful to him.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i do think there is a (unlikely) scenario where tesla’s value begins to shrink which causes a significant liquidity problem for twitter since there is no way the site is generating meaningful revenue now, but i think that kind of speculation is pointless in the end since who knows what similarly rich doofus he could get to bail him out.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

tesla will be bought by one of the big guys when they collectively take all of teslas marketshare with affordable, repairable, un-recalled versions of its products.... someone will want the name. it certainly wont be for the manufacturing lines.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why would anybody think like it'll die soon?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because of how Elmo is running Twitter/X

I still think it'll take 3-5 years before it finally dies

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Will Threads ever come popular?

I never had account in Twitter, but for me it looks like it's become a honeypot for right-wing useful idiots. And it has gained a lots of attraction simply because the censorship was ended in just one night.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Social networks rarely “die”. They simply become irrelevant. MySpace still exists.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It's the 5th most hit site globally, it's going nowhere.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

The question is, will it remain that way in the coming years?

MSN messenger was at one point the world's most used communicator app too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Most of those are not profitable...

And Twitter is saddled with literally billions of dollars of debt it wasn't a year ago, and payments start soon.

Either he's going to have to start paying obscene amounts of his own money to keep it at its current level, or he drastically cuts workers and/or infrastructure.

For this to have worked, he'd have to take one of the popular websites in the world (that doesn't make a profit) and make it mote popular while monetizing it.

So it maintaining it's old position just isn't enough. And things can (likely will) nosedive soon.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

With all the public talking about it and not understanding that they are giving the popularity, im pretty sure its not going to die soon.

Its weird, some people seem to be on things just because daddy elon fucks is related to it. Its sickening.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Platforms rarely completely die, as in they shut down, they just become irrelevant. Digg still around despite being long supplanted by Reddit, MySpace still exists after everyone went to Facebook, but nobody cares about them anymore.

Twitter/X will end up the same, unless some real catastrophic happens financially or legally.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think it's going to have a slow death.

Right now it's going through it's "Lady gaga phase", doing more and more ridiculous things. Maybe this is the equivalent of a meat dress.

Eventually people will grow tired of the drama. Either it is a good product at the end (Lady Gaga is a pretty bloody great singer) or it'll be dead.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

AOL is still a thing. kinda. twitter isnt going to die, its going to fade out into irrelevance

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So are MySpace and Digg. Some other (smaller) social networks have failed entirely, but the really entrenched ones don't seem to ever really die off completely.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"Megathread" for one of the 25 Technology magazines on this site doesn't really work. That concept might work on Reddit but it really doesn't work here with all of the tech forums being so distributed. There can't be common sizing of rules unfortunately. I'm still scrolling past dozens of the same article, or 6 other megathreads for the same topic.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It’s also the second tech community I’ve seen implement this policy in 24hrs.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

This seems like a very poor decision. Just create a limit of 1 article per discrete Twitter topic. It's obvious that the users want to discuss the Twitter trainwreck, just as it's obvious that a substantial number of users are also tired of hearing about it.

I think we'd agree that free reign to post as much about Twitter as you'd like would be over the top, but I think a mega thread like this is too far in the other direction. The compromise position here is fewer articles, not none at all.

I appreciate that it's difficult to steward a community like this as moderators. It needs a guiding hand to stay on topic and not devolve into just spam about a single topic. At the same time, too firm of a hand will too heavily restrict topics, and people will leave for greener pastures if they don't find the available topics interesting.

(Sorry if this is the wrong place, I looked for an option to directly message the moderation team but couldn't find one.)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

In X-related news: X Japan just released their first single in 8 years!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Such a great way to condense content.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'd just like to point out that not a single article about anything relegated to this megathread - which is relatively broad actually - has been posted since this began. The most recent comments are 4 days old and are either jokes or saying "good."

As many of us noted, these subjects have been functionally banned from this community. I won't be pointing it out/arguing about it anymore. But mods, if you're actually reading this you should just abandon or at least acknowledge what this is amongst yourselves.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

People are obsessed with Elon musk

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It's more that people enjoy schadenfreude.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The twitter/musk posts are getting large amount of upvotes so just figured that's why people keep posting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Definitely the best way to handle all this.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Informative, to the point, with just a little bit of sass on the tail-end there. Well done PopBobert. No sarcasm.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Yea this aint gonna fix people from making their own posts about it anyways...
