Watched Oppenheimer today. It's a fantastic film. Christopher Nolan is a fucking genius. The way the movie is structured, the quality of scenes, the general feel, everything is so refreshing. It was a revelation when most of the movies releasing are woke shit.

But still barbie gets more popular than Oppenheimer? What? I watched trailers and reviews of barbie and from what I know, it's a woke shit that tells matriarchy is better than patriarchy, with a bit of comedy admittedly. I mean yes they can have their freedom of speech, but how does a film like that shadows a fucking artwork like Oppenheimer? What am I missing?

Hasn’t seen Barbie yet asserts that 1) Another movie is better and 2) the movie they’ve not seen is “woke shit”.

Yep, about the level of discourse I’d expect from someone who uses the word “woke” unironically.

Also, i strongly suspect you’re not getting your opinions from trailers, but rather from the typical brain dead right wing mouthpieces who completely missed the point of Barbie, because of course they did.

"woke shit"

"Please be civil"

I loled

I meant like not go too far... Yeah you can say shit

I was actually talking about you parroting GOP dogwhistles.

But anyway. The reason barbie is outperforming Oppenheimer is that half the population didn't have an Oppenheimer doll for the last 40 years. It's cultural inertia, and while Oppenheimer clearly has a much bigger role in the creation of the modern world barbie has a much bigger role in individual lives.

I'll always love my little Oppie doll and his Oppie Dream Nuke.

Your comment of "woke shit" and "pls be civil" cancel each other out there.

But with not seeing either movie, I would say the big difference is Barbie is a family movie. Now is Oppenheimer a better movie from a technical standpoint? Absolutely, but parents can't really drop the kids off to go watch a rate R movie.

lol that got me too, like bud you started not being civil . Also I love both movies, but you cant be suprised that people don’t wanna be bummed watching a movie about a massive death event and instead want a comedy

Barbie has a bigger audience target, and even kids can go see it and have fun. I wouldn't bring my toddlers to see Oppenheimer, I'd go watch it with only my wife but that requires finding someone to watch after them for at least 3 hours

What am I missing?

The last 50 or so years of Mankind's history.

[–] [email protected] -4 points 1 year ago

Explain a bit more, maybe?

It's not more popular, oppenheimer has 2.5x more box office, imdb ratings...

I didn't watch the movies yet, but I'm sure both are good enough. Even barbie, Greta Gerwig didn't make a bad movie yet and her husband helping to cowrite is always a good result.

Nevertheless it's the same as it was always, movies get popular because of marketing, which is frustrating for me to confess. And they get popular, because they are already popular and they look kinda fun and popy.

Most people really don't care about other aspects of the filmmaking. And in my opinion your example is less frustrating, than Marvel dominating for the last decade.

"Why are apples more popular than oranges?"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

I mean, why? Apples are the worst fruit there is while oranges are close to perfect.

Are you seriously confused why a fun summer movie based on a property everyone has heard of is doing more business than a movie about nuclear physics?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

But it haz woke, ver bad to movie

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The world is on fire. People want to relax. Barbie does that better than Oppenheimer, which mostly just reminds us of the fragility of our existence and that there are people out there trying to destroy the world for whatever reason they've gotten into their heads.

Barbie draws in families with children, who tend to make up a large percentage of movie-goers. Those families won't be going to see Oppenheimer. They're also inherently larger groups than, say, a couple with no kids. Meanwhile, people who go to see Oppenheimer might also go to see Barbie. I guess I'm just saying that Barbie has a larger potential pool of viewers.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago

Hmm.. That maybe the case. I just think Oppenheimer is not getting enough recognition for what it is..

I watched both within a few days of each other and liked Barbie way more than Oppenheimer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I posted my thoughts on the movies in their respective megathreads already so I won’t repost them. But it comes down to the simple fact that Christopher Nolan and his gimmicks drive me insane and I’ve never been a fan of his albeit technically impressive filmmaking.

Also it’s hilarious that you’re complaining of Barbie’s wokeness just cause what, it’s written and directed by a woman? Nolan can learn from that and perhaps add a female writer to his arsenal. He sucks at handling female characters and Oppenheimer is a prime example of that. Talk about wasted opportunities having Emily Blunt and Flo Pugh and relegating them to a mere drunk housewife and a pair of breasts. Actually every time I think about how Pugh’s character was handled I knock the movie down a couple more points. 🙄

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yo same thoughts about Pugh, why did they have to frame everything with her boobs in it just right??? Felt out of place

Holy shit dude, learn to write before attempting to engage in written conversation. This reads like it was written by a 13 year old who barely pays attention in class. It's so clear you're not actually asking in good faith and just felt compelled to complain. To answer your "question", people are less likely to seek out art about privileged men destroying things than they are a fun summer movie.
