Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition

I live in a colder climate (frost-free growing season is June 1 - September 1), so I use store bought and homemade small greenhouses on my outdoor gardens to extend my growing season. Here are my thoughts:

  • Moisture: They are decent at keeping things more humid. However if the garden is outside and in direct sun then on warm days you’d need to open up the sides some to let heat out, which would also let the moisture out. Otherwise the plants get cooked as the greenhouses get very hot. I have a pitcher plant indoors that I keep in a tiny greenhouse to keep the humidity up and that works well but it’s not in direct sun
  • Shade: I’ve seen commercial ginseng farms that use shade cloth over the plants because ginseng usually grows in the woods and so doesn’t like much direct sunlight. Shade cloth may be a better option for the sunrot. Or a shade cloth over a greenhouse - I haven’t tried that so I don’t know how much the shade cloth would change how hot the greenhouse gets

Didn’t spot this one right away so it got away from me. They’re gherkins, I plan to make sweet pickles. Not with this monster though, we ate it fresh and it was delicious.

Very true. I got more curious and found this discussion trying to trace “debug.”

[-] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

That is one very disapproving pigeon

Also how debugging got its name, because bugs would get into the vacuum tubes

Edit: I did some digging and found what’s claimed to be the actual “de-bugging”. Turns out it wasn’t as widespread as my memory made it out to be.

Dammit it’s a one-day job. Guess I’ll stop updating my resume.

Good point on the baking time and temp

Thanks, I’ll have to see what I can figure out. I realize now I let these be too free form because that’s how I usually make hamburger buns.

This makes a lot of sense. I’ll have to try them in a 9x13 next time.

I live by alarms and reminders. I also try and automate as much as possible so I don’t have to rely on me remembering or being focused.

Finch (app) for little dopamine bursts for doing the basics - I have everything like get out of bed, take meds, put on clean clothes. It doesn’t penalize you if you miss anything, it just celebrates when you check things as done. When you do enough things in a day your penguin gets to go on an adventure.

Alexa and Siri - I have routines set up through Alexa, either to remind me of things at a certain time each day or ones I can set by saying a specific phrase. For example, when I say “Alexa I started the laundry” she’ll remind me an hour later to put the laundry in the dryer. Siri I use to make phone reminders whenever something pops into my mind so I don’t have to try and hold onto the thought and then forget what I was doing. My kid will even say to me, “Tell Siri now so you don’t forget.”

I’ve been playing around with the project management app Trello. I don’t have everything set up yet but it has “boosts” I think they’re called - basically different automations you can install and use within Trello. So for example you can link Trello to your calendar and then when certain events get added to your calendar Trello can automatically create a list of things you need to do before the event. And if you also link reminders it can automatically create the reminders to get those things done too. My struggle right now is just having the focus to figure out how to set up all the automations and link everything.

First try at making hot dog buns today. Next time I’m definitely going to do 8 buns instead of 6. Other than that, do you have any tips or tricks to shaping them?

Just have to vent, because I’m struggling to finish this sweater. The body was knit with US 17s (12mm). Now I’m doing the sleeves on US 19s (16mm) because my gauge was too tight with the 17s. I have discovered I don’t like knitting with these size needles. They’re uncomfortable for me to hold and knitting with them feels like a chore.

Vent over. Hopefully I’ll get this sweater off the needles today or tomorrow, and now I know to avoid any more projects using these needles.

Newly emerged. Landed on some netting while I was gardening, seems to be settled in for the night.

WIP Wednesday (i.postimg.cc)

Needed a new car knitting project as my Kelowna sweater is too big now to work on comfortably. So I cast on some socks for me.

Decided to get sleeve island out of the way. I’m worried I won’t have enough yarn even though I’m on gauge. I am using different yarn than the pattern and it’s definitely not the bulkiest bulky yarn I’ve ever used.

I picked up 12 stitches in the underarm (instead of the pattern’s 6) because I was worried about holes. I may have some small ones to close up at the end but we’ll see how they look after blocking.

The socks with my first ever fish lips kiss heel are done! They even got a spin through the washer and dryer because our dog spilled milk on them (yes our dog lol).

My spouse tried them on and they fit perfectly. For my next pair of socks I’m not sure if I’ll use this heel again - I do really like it but now it’s got me wondering what other awesome heels I haven’t done yet.

This week got away from me, I spent most of today thinking it was Wednesday. I started this sweater on Saturday. Thankfully we were in a city visiting family, as I’d overlooked the fact that this pattern uses 12mm needles for the body (the largest I have is 8mm). I was able to run to the store and pick some up right away.

I tried all 3 sizes for the neckline and none looked like the right fit, so I decided to do a provisional cast on and worry about the collar later.
