Yeah. I want to donate directly towards the development of FF, but I can't. I know several other people who of a similar disposition.

This is definitely not helped by many of the most vocal anti-israelites also being antisemites (at least from my experiences irl, along with what I've heard from family).

One of the many reasons I keep that part of my identity hidden irl. It's a lot less bad on here, but still an issue.

The kinds of medication (cortisone) used in these cases aren't mind altering. If this problem is something you're actually bothered by, ask your doctor specifically to explain what the medication does, what kinds of side effects are common and to follow up on it (I could too, but my time is limited).

At the very least consider it. I'd hate for somebody to be suffering from a preventable illness unneccessarily.

*There's always an asterisk, and that is that low down in the side effects depression is listed. However, this is the case even for common medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Suffering from disease is also a potential cause of depression (yeah life sucks sometimes), usually with higher incidence.

I struggle to think of someone for my generation, but someone who I've looked up to is Carl Sagan, even if he passed before I was born.

A bit more recent - Sam Gamgee.

If you don't feel safe with taking your (I expect it'd be cortisone) pills, ask your doctor about it. Steroids aren't inherently harmful, and the kind used in these cases definitely not addicting. The body actually produces a decent amount on its own in different varities, testosterone for instance.

The reason that professional athletes get checked for even these types is that higher doses can have performance-enhancing effects. If you are a professional athlete, probably ask someone in the field about it, even they can get excemptions if there's a (proven) underlying medical condition.

I'd actually lean towards the opposite for similar reasons. I think it'd be hard to get the current politicians to implement proportional representation without a referendum. The current system benefits them. Having a (successful) referendum would give the issue momentum that can keep it going through bureaucratic & political obstacles.

These are the sort of things that ought to be automated. It'll be interesting to see how Japan handles their demographic crisis going forwards. If they manage it without significantly increased migration, that'll be a standard for the rest of the developed world to follow.

[-] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Why not have a referendum?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah, if the road in front is clear on both sides it's generally safer to swerve than to slam the brakes.

Your study is locked behind a paywall :(

For a fun comparison, I usually run the numbers for our 2004 Audi A2 with biodiesel (HVO100) against the most efficient electric vehicles, based on Swedish grid emissions and then US emissions.

The Audi runs at 4L/100km (real world numbers) x 256g/L (compensated emissions according to Neste) = 1024g/100km

Versus the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (current most efficient EV according to mestmotor in real world testing) with a consumption of 15.5kWh/100km * 41g/kWh (Sweden according to ourworldindata) * 1.15 (charging losses) = 730.8g/100km.

For the US that's 15.5kWh/100km * 369g/kWh *1.15 = 6577.4g/100km.

So compared to a US EV our car runs with a whopping 6th of the real emissions. Assuming the same production impact that your article linked it would take 11tons*10000000grams/(1024-730.8)grams/km = 37517 kilometers

In Sweden, where I live, 78.5% of paper packaging put into the market was recycled for materials (as opposed to recycled for energy a.k.a burning it in a power plant)

At least where I live even the interior lining and lid are now made from cellulose fibers and as such the packaging is (a) fully renewable and (b) the materials can be reused for other paper-esque products.

The song (by Sabaton) came on as I was heading to work this Thursday, and I found myself tearing up. It's the first time in a few years that I heard it and it hit differently. I've got relatives and friends of friends in active duty.

Not anyone I'm in touch with, but I've met them, and I hear of them. The price of a mile is the suffering and lives of them, their friends, and so many other young men.

One of my bubbles has been burst by what's happening in Ukraine & Israel. War is no longer history, news and reports. It has become a lot more real to me, and it's something I could end up being a part of.

This feels like a rather serious topic for a community called casual conversation, but feel free to share your thoughts on this, or a "bubble bursting" moment of your own.

It actually states that you may transfer your rights to the game to another person, which is, like... wow.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen this in another steam-connected game.

I still dislike the wording around the fact that the TOS can be changed at any time, and refusing revokes your right to playing it (without any compensation), but that's pretty much industry standard (unfortunately). This however, stood out to me.

P.S: If any of y'all have some extraordinary TOS's for other games that stand out in good (or bad) way feel free to share, it'd be interesting to know if there are others!

So I've got a pretty old smartphone and have replaced the battery once already. I've kept track of wear with the help of accubattery, since the phone didn't have that built in.

However, enshittification is encroaching, and I'm now looking for alternatives. What are some decent options?

In our current day and age, it's rather hard to meet new people and make new friends, particularly for those of us who do not participate in mainstream social media. So, how and where do you meet new people? Feel free to add some context around that.

As something of a history buff I've read about a fair few Kings and Queens through history. There are many of them, most mediocre, a lot of them objectively bad, however, now and again one stands out from the masses as a good one.

So, what (according to you) makes a good monarch? Feel free to point to a particular person, or event as an example :)

If you, like me, live in the EU, Facebook is now entirely clamping down and forcing free users to make their personal data available for monetization.

Attempting to access any Facebook domain and perhaps also other meta products will redirect you to the following prompt with a choice between either accepting the monetization of your user data, or coughing up a region-dependent monthly subscription fee: base (for me ~10€) + an additional fee (~7€) for each additional facebook or instagram account you have.

Now, the hidden third option. At an initial glance, it seems like there is no other option but to click one of the buttons - however, certain links still work, and grant access to important pieces of functionality through your web browser.

If anyone has information to add regarding Facebook or Instagram, please do share it. I've only (begrudgingly) used the former up until now, but I know many others use Instagram and don't feel like giving a single cent (nor their personal info) to Meta.

  1. https://www.facebook.com/dyi - perhaps most important of all, now is a good time to make a request to download your Facebook data. Don't forget to switch to data for "all time" and "high quality" if you intend to permanently delete your account.

  2. https://www.facebook.com/your_information - here you can find and manage your information, but crucially also access Facebook messenger.

  3. The messenger app: Still hasn't prompted me with anything, though I expect that will change in the not too far future.

Currently my plan is to use messenger to inform any important friends that I intend to leave FB, and where they'll be able to reach me in the future.
