From Artylst: "With their biomorphic shapes and Disneyesque figures, her early works show the influence of Surrealists such as Miro, along with the violent graphics of popular Portuguese comics, and feed into her ferocious sense of irony. Later, while living in London, Rego would take on Portugal’s political establishment and, in particular, its treatment of women. This reached its acme after the failure of the referendum to legalise abortion, in her searing landmark series painted between 1997-98. Here, women wracked with pain crouch on chamber pots and over plastic buckets or lie traumatised on their beds. As in most of Rego’s work, the idealised female of art history gives way to a lived, sentient reality. These are not the draped muses of the European canon offered for the male gaze but women with solid thighs and arms who bear children, cook and scrub floors, working women with their own sexual longings, vulnerabilities, subterranean angers and strengths."

We have this nightmare in the UK. I'm very fortunate to have a small house just about paying mortgage on a tiny wage, but not really big enough to rent a room. I feel bad for people in their 40s (even couples) who can't afford a starter home because all the properties are locked up in a rental market.

I pray to calm down. I ask for genuine connection with others, the wellbeing of my country, a wife, that my customers at work would enjoy themselves and we would make ends meet. Ask and you will receive.

Definitely making progress this year but it's been a slow road to 40. Friends with a common interest, that's finally coming about.

Jury duty wasn't fun (child abuse case), but it was one hell of an education. I'm still greatful to have had such smart fellow jurors so we could really consider everything. You get to see how the world works.

Our railways are fucked, our healthcare system is hanging by a thread. I'm so grateful for NHS care and investigations in the last year - dread to think how much Americans would have to pay to find out they have a shitty disease, let alone treat it.

They really had to stimulate the imagination because graphics back then were basic. I was a 90's kid that bought PC games in a big box: with maps, wall posters, manuals, keyboard overlays. Exciting art all round.
