What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

These are the cover artworks for Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive by Josan Gonzalez (Deathburger). The covers were used for the Brazilian reprints.

Deathburger makes a bunch of cyberpunk art in this style and he posts a lot of it to his Instagram page.

Book covers in the US are almost always wack with the rare gems. I get that it's marking, not just art for arts sake, but I don't think I have a single modern book, one that's not old 60's sci-fi, that has a cover where I go, dam, that's cool.

I'm lucky I enjoy terrible book covers - Baen alone makes for a pretty good collection

Most of The Expanse are pretty cool. I saw a talk about book cover design from someone working for a major publisher. A lot of it is trying to convey the book itself through the cover.

There were 3 main types: drawn art for conveying a specific kind of setting or theme, photography often for lead characters or media tie ins, and abstract for conveying a feel. That's grossly simplifying but it was interesting.

I like Al the expanse covers, but can never suss out how they apply to the story

They don't usually directly. I think they are just stylized ships and platforms to evoke the feeling of space battles.
