One day they'll shut down gmail and urge users to switch to xmail, and on that day I'll finally be free of google

It's almost better to just not use Google apps.

They pulled this same shit with Play Music. I lost years of music I'd bought with no recourse other than "use our shitty YouTube app, and if you want to listen without internet, then fuck you. (="

I don't care who they send or kill, I'm not fucking using YouTube music. I'll just do without, thanks.

AntennaPod is nice and FOSS. I went there when Pocket Casts started to introduce more and more subscription features after they went free to install, and never looked back.

Yep, started like 2 weeks ago and its been good so far. The transition from google podcasts was only about 3 buttons to export then import it. Very simple.

I don't listen to podcasts often, so I'm still using Pocketcasts, but your comment may prompt me to switch. Thanks for the suggestion

Play music was shut down long enough ago that you may well have sorted something out, but in case you or anyone else reading hasn't, then you may well still be able to download your full music library.

Google takeout let's you download your library, unfortunately it just gives you a bunch of zip files filled with random unlabelled files. You can then use something like Picard to sort out all the file names and metadata. It's a bit of a faff, but it gets the job done.

Well, that was super easy to use. Great tip!

Another one bites the dust, and another one’s gone and another one’s gone, another one bite’s the dust…

I just can't believe how we are supposed to even trust this company not pulling the plug on all of their apps and services.

I avoid google products, but seeing this still hurts knowing that a lot of people will be affected.

What's really cool is the shitty search function that shows everything BUT the episodes you're looking for and also the fact that if a production company from a show you finished puts out a new podcast that you are interested in, there's no way to find it and subscribe to listen to it

I was driving recently and tried to get my phone to play a podcast with the Google assistant.

  • Started playing unrelated music
  • Played a song about podcasts
  • Played a podcast from several months ago, which I finished, in Google Podcast, which I uninstalled...
  • Made me give up and listen to music

I did. It had great simplicity without ads, and would sync with all my devices. When I heard it was shutting down I was bummed, but Antennapod with gpodder for syncing is great.

[–] Eyck_of_denesle 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Antennapod sync never works for me

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

Yeah, using gpodder.net had sporadic functionality for me. I ended up self hosting my own gpodder server, using the fantastic micro gpodder server project. Highly recommend.

I did, but it will be a cold day in hell before I use YouTube Music... I already found all the same podcasts in another free app lol

Podcast addict is my go to since spotify sucks with podcasts, I really like the options to auto add episodes to your queue in different priorities

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Not op, but I am also someone who used Google Podcasts and after trying a couple free and partially-free option, I've landed on Pocket Casts. Been using it a few months now and I wonder why I didn't try it sooner.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago

I did too. Moved to AntennaPod when they first announced that bullshit. GPod was...fine. I started using it because it was there and it wasn't enough of an irritant to switch over.
