Was reading about the why is programming.dev federated with us post on DMT and was reading some of the comments like this one which specifically mentions my latest meme. Now, Idgaf what the one guy thinks, but I don't really want to be the (or a predominant) cause of us getting defedded even more either.

So I was wondering: a) is it possible and b) if it makes sense that we would want to hide those kinds of subs from the main page. If this was already discussed somewhere else, then sorry for rehashing but I couldn't find it.

I think hiding things from default feed might be possible based on this: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2072

Anyway I don't know jack shit about the lemmy codebase, settings, etc so no clue if I am even reading this right.

Note: I am not suggesting any particular course of action, only asking what people here think and if it might be worthwhile as sort of an olive branch to other instances while we still have our fun in the various subs. Assuming it even possible. I'm fine with whatever, just thought I'd ask.

If this place was so intolerant and full of right wing reactionaries, I could not post the following picture. those other sites, they shit their pants if I posted the any equivalent. reality is that EH is the most well adjusted and tolerant instances on Lemmy.

Like this one better myself but totally agree we don't cry about memes

LMAO. love it.

If we are trying to advocate free speech here, then it would not make sense to develop censorship tools.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

You really can't think of it as censorship. It's categorical social media. It's value is what is curated. While there is a market for controversial material it's small in comparison to good categorized content. The reddit format imo is not best for freespeech.

4chan does a decent job by having content just constantly disappear. And it can even pay the bills.

4chan makes you click on the nsfw categories, warns you about it and then that content just kinda goes away after a while so it can't be brought up as arguments against the site later.

But it's harder to navigate so you pay a price for that.

EH may be a little saucy here and there.. but it is NO where near what all the fear mongering is about. This is not stormfront or some other hate site by any stretch other than the by the delusional mind, but those people can't handle a single blurb outside their safe space echo chamber. I'll happily come to their instance and stir shit up.

Absolutely 100% agree with everything you said here.

I only asking about front page visibility. Definitely not suggesting to stop or change how we operate. And even if the answer is "no, fuck those crybabies" then I'm cool with that, just figured I'd at least ask.

I’ll happily come to their instance and stir shit up.

Probably that wouldn't help us any in the eyes of neutral parties.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

no.. it wouldn't help. agree.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wonder if it's possible to do that

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah, I could be way off and it's not actually possible (at least not currently)

I did see one of the linked PRs here

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/2055

Had something about it but it also has this

2. Hidden communities do not show up in all, local, or trending unless subscribed

Which might mean that hiding it is more of a full-site action that would affect Search too and frankly if that's the only option, I vote for no way, not worth it

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That was my pull request. And my first attempt to try to please free speech folk and other instances. people didn't like it and no one used it.

All it did was piss off the free speech crowd and did not make the sjws happy.

Thanks for the insight, hadn't realized that was you or that you guys had already discussed all of this. Guess it isn't worth bothering then.

I was concerned about contributing to the problem but it sounds like it is a problem that would exist even if I stopped posting offense memes and such in dankmemes or if that was hidden from front page. I didn't really expect the complainers would be satisfied with something like that but figured if someone was specifically complaining about my posts appearing on main page in a defed discussion, I should at least check in with EH people that they don't mind

We could build better moderation tools, better fine tuning for the individual user but in the greater lemmy community it won't matter. It's about control of narrative not about freedom. Instances will still defederate because they hate you and everything good. Lemmy was made by communist for redditors. Just think about that for a moment. The kind of people that make up it's user base . And they employ bots and dozens of alts when shit talking about other instances to appear larger than life. Well balanced people don't have time for that kinda bull shit. I don't want to add any more value to lemmy and prefer to instead build off nostr. Where I still see a path forward for multiple ways of thinking in a singleish arena.

Maybe if activity pub gets decentralized identities I'll revisit that thought.

I know posters are likely just trying to supply a steady stream of content, and in that regard I can't blame them. But the meme subs here feel like I'm following my redneck grandpa on Facebook, except without the funny euphemisms. I want to be creatively shocked, not bored by the same generic "GENITALS AMIRITE?" posts.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Most complaints I get are usually triggered people from other instances.

But this is actually very fair criticism imo. I am guilty especially. Pretty much everything I've posted to date is a repost. Will endeavor to work on some OC when I get time. Can't promise it'll be great but I think I can at least do better than "GENITALS AMIRITE?". Might be a bit till I have time to sit down and play around in gimp or pinta tho.

Thanks for the solid response. I'm aware that this is for the most part a conservative leaning instance, so it makes sense that certain topics get a lot of air time. But I also think it easily leads to what I'd refer to as "humor stagnation". That's really my only point of thought.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

FWIW, I do try to mix in some generic, mostly non-political stuff here and there (though admittedly I have an order of magnitude more political memes than non-political ones in my collection of stolen memes).

But I don't disagree with your point. Mixing it up more is definitely better for avoiding stagnation.
