Hey y'all, just an experiment, if it works out I'll clean it up and run it

Still needs some design corrections because I just didn't know how to properly do 3D print and industrial design but it works!

So fuckin' sick, dude. What's the keyboard?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Thanks mate! :) The keyboard is this board:

plus these switches:

And these caps, but the caps are lacking some symbols and for space I used the numpad 0 for now, will need to buy those separately or get new caps:

Looks dope! Though my first thought was something like this:

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

it's "only" 5cm tall (about 2 inches) which is not that bad, I can rest my palms comfortably on top of the body while typing so it's actually much more comfortable than it looks. when it's on your lap it's actually comfortable I'd say

I dig the look of this.

What are the specs?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Hey thanks! :) So it's using an orange pi 5 plus that uses a 8 core 2.4ghz Rockchip RK3588 with 16gb ram and I installed a 1tb ssd nvme Screen is a touch screen 1920×1080 and I have 14×18650 batteries each are 3500mah which in theory must be 49ah but practically it's less, maybe the fault of the powerbank chip, not sure. it weights about 2.4kg with all the batteries but I prefer heavy than useless haha

Looks great! Would you consider posting this to [email protected] too?

Really cool! Was it months to get the print right, or putting it all together?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Thank you! Designing was by far the longest part, I bought all the parts first then measured everything and made the 3D models. Started with freecad but it was way too much for a beginner like me so I had to switch to fusion. Then printed test parts since for example the bottom frame takes like 20h to print and I had to cut a part, print it, see if it fits with the electronics (for example trackball seat) Then I designed the art which was going on top of it, I downloaded 3d scans from sketchfab and arranged them together. Then I had like 5 failed prints for several reasons, each took like a day and many parts I had to print again because it'd not fit or not print properly (since I'm such a noob lol) Then I tried many times to fix the charging without any success, ordered many parts from aliexpress which didn't work. it's still a work on progress but after 4 months I'm a bit burnt out so I'll give myself a bit of rest before I fix the remaining problems :)

Amazingly cool! Thanks for sharing!

Heat pipes and fans for cooling? Does the exhaust go out of the wrist area?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So that's a problem at the moment. I am using Orange pi 5 plus which is an arm processor and it doesn't get hot by default, plus there's a fan and heat sink on it, so I didn't put any exhaust holes for aesthetics, but now it turns on the fan every a few minutes for a minute because it gets too hot in there plus the ssd nvme is generating a lot of heat. it's running in about 58°c which is alright but I'm planning to add a small fan and some exhaust holes for the next version.

Super neat! I love the ornamentation that you designed for the case and keyboard. It's a bit like Blade Runner and Lord of the Rings had a love child...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Thank you! :) Yes I often think about a different kind of cyberpunk that's mixed with old fantasy elements and how it'd be

Thanks! it's actually a disassembled Chinese trackball mouse that I found on aliexpress:

Thank you :)

Where's the rest of the keyboard?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

It's a 40% keyboard, so there are two function keys, if you hold the first one the top row becomes F keys and number keys, hold both at the same time and you have media controls etc. It's a fully programmable keyboard so you can mix and match keys as you wish :)

nice! share the stls with us so we can rip you off 😉

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I will definitely share them, but there are some design problems that I have to solve first, for example the hinge on the back doesn't sit right and there's a small gap when you close the screen, also some parts broke while assembling and I had to glue them back since I used wrong size for screws. Will fix the problems and share the design in a few weeks :)
