So where was this BEFORE it came to this point? Even for THIS election.

It’s all well and good people are finally wanting to do something, but fuck the writings been on the walls for decades, kinda hard to feel bad at this point.

In fairness, the group talking about this (Run for something) has existed since 2017 and elected about a thousand progressives in local and state government. They haven't been idle before this, just seems like there's more people interested now

We need everyone we can get now to fight back. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today

I think this is the step between supporting the experienced people around you, and feeling that you're ready to take it on yourself

Fine, I'll do it myself

[–] [email protected] 15 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I don't want to hold power i don't want to be the one. It's not something I want to do. BUT if the fucking people i choose don't want to do what I ask them to do i guess I will fucking do it my self.

I imagine a lot of people were supporting people in power currently or thinking the people they were electing were more qualified and were trying. The democratic party with their move to the right shows they don't. This inspires people to do it themselves. There is lots of self doubt and reflection in leftists lives. Someone can do it better someone is more experienced, more qualified, deserving or older. Until people drop the ball enough or rage and revolutionary fires are sparked that is when people do things.

I studied politics, and even then I never wanted to run. I just wanted to be a staffer and work on policy and tactics.

I left politics because I felt I couldn't help people, and inter party politics were not something I was interested in. I went back to school so I could help people more directly as a nurse.

I don't think I'm a great candidate, but I feel like I have to do something. No one is coming to save us, we have to so it ourselves.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

The democrats are full of people wanting to do the right thing. They thought that since Harris won as VP, she was an easy out. She obviously wasn't.

Do you guys realize they they're trying to turn us against ourselves so that we don't notice that Trump said to not worry about the election months ago? He wasn't even trying in the last couple of weeks. They have been placing election officials for 4 years. They legally cheated with a fuck ton of propaganda coming from Russia.

Don't fall for the trap or I'm going to put you in with the republicans and democrats that sat this one out. You're being stooges.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I personally think that this election process was an eye opener to many people of what can happen when you decide to protest vote or believe in the faith of others. Now I doubt this many people will stay running for office but like it currently is, and believe this is an image movement more than anything, but like, I do think that it opened everyone's eyes (again) that maybe we shouldn't just sit around and do nothing and let others decide what our best interests are, because it rarely actually matches

The freedom fighters in history are my very favorite heroes. I have never wanted to be one. Electing competent leaders always seemed like a much better plan. I really hope I never have to put in the hard work of using my body to protect my loved ones and friends. I hate that I’m even having to think about this.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Electing competent leaders always seemed like a much better plan

Agreed. If only there had been any to choose from. Instead you get a choice between "maintain the fire burning down your house and sometimes stoke it" and "throw gasoline on it" 😮‍💨

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

"maintain the fire burning down your house and sometimes stoke it" and "throw gasoline on it" 😮‍💨

Fucking. Bullshit.

Get the fuck out of here with "both sides" cold takes.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

YOU get the fuck out of here with your "criticizing one side while making clear that the other is much worse is the same thing as saying that both sides are the same" bullshit.

Just because Republicans are much worse doesn't mean that Democrats are exempt from criticism when they're not doing their job of faithfully representing the interests of the people. ESPECIALLY when it leads to Republicans winning elections.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Your criticism of democrats is either dumb or/and disingenuous.

they're not doing their job of faithfully representing the interests of the people.

Straight up misinformation. In addition to fixing the economy, Biden administration forgave $175 billions in student loans, lowered unemployment, passed PACT act, CHIPS act, infrastructure bill, expanded healthcare, appointed Lina Khan on FTC, someone who's going as hard as she can against corporates. FTC banned non-compete clauses under her leadership.

There are multiple different reports about Biden administration's work, if you care to look.

Of course the administration had to navigate through the real world challenges and they couldn't manage to wave a wand and turn USA into utopia.

But to ignore the work they've done and say

"they maintain the fire burning down your house and sometimes stoke it"

is abso-fucking-lutely stupid.

You're as misinformed as Fox News viewer.

And now we have example of Brandolini's law, "The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it."

Took you less than a minutes to be callously ignorant and it took me 15 minutes to refute it, not for you but for others who might click this thread.

Get informed or get fucked.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I recognize both of y'all from around here and you both often have decent takes. Maybe take a step back and try to salvage things between each other, I know it'd be worth it. Peace.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Look at the 'decent take' he just posted. Nothing democrats did will ever be good enough for these twats because they want everything, right now. Incremental change? What the fuck is that?

I'm better off blocking this wanker for the sake of my mental health.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The DNC clearly needs progressives to win, and yet liberals refuse to do anything but antagonize and insult and condescend to leftists.

We tried "incremental change" with Hillary in 2016 and lost, Biden leaned more on progressive talking points and won (barely). The DNC saw that and said, "alright, so 2024, we're gonna go hard right again."

All the while, leftists and progressives, throughout the campaign, were vocally calling for policies that better reflected their needs and concerns. They weren't asking for everything, but they wanted something to show them the DNC was willing to compromise with them.

Instead, people like you and the Harris campaign, doubled down on Republican-lite policies because "stop fascism," condescended to and screamed at anyone who tried to criticize Harris and her policies during the, refused to meet us, the leftists they need to win the election, anywhere in the middle, but then extended a warm and welcoming arm to Cheney and her Republican ilk.

So why is it the Democrats are more willing to compromise with Republicans who won't vote for them, but not compromise with their own constituents looking for a progressive option to vote for rather than only an option to vote against?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Not an American and too tired to deal with this fuckery. Keep riding that moral high horse while Trump takes a wrecking ball to the country. Same goes for those supposedly millions of leftist/progressives who'd rather risk a Trump presidency than have a dialog with Harris administration.

Ciao.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Yep, keep plugging your ears and telling yourself the voting base that wasn't represented in either candidate stayed home and it's their fault.

Not the fault of an unpopular platform telling Americans the numbers on their papers and charts are more important than their lived reality.

CiAo 🙄

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah, but all he'll be remembered for is his part in the Gaza genocide. History's funny that way.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Your criticism of democrats is either dumb or/and disingenuous.

Nope. It's accurate.

Straight up misinformation

Thanks for starting your paragraph with a section heading so I know what's coming.

fixing the economy

The stock market and other indicators that the rich is doing well, you mean. The vast majority of regular people are doing worse today than before covid and Trump's criminal mishandling of it demolished everything.

Biden administration forgave $175 billions in student loans

That's an inflated number. The loan forgiveness has been a drop in the bucket compared to the full scope of the problem, means tested to hell and back, and with reams of paperwork required to even be considered. That's not what the people wills.

lowered unemployment

According to cherrypicked numbers that only counts the newly unemployed and actively job-seeking.

The millions of people who have been unemployed for a long time and finally given up aren't represented in the statistics you and your favorite demagogues are so proud of.

passed PACT act

CONGRESS passed that. After dozens of veterans camped outside the capital for days in protest of their inaction.

CHIPS act

Giant giveaway to exploitative corporations

infrastructure bill

Same, but with bragging about minimal climate change mitigation improvements while downplaying 10 million acres of new federal fossil fuel land leases.

expanded healthcare

Another case of the people wanting a mile, needing half a mile to barely get by without being forced to choose between death or lifelong debt, and getting an inch.

appointed Lina Khan on FTC

Admittedly a great thing done as a concession to the much more progressive people who suggested her. Same with Lauren McFerran at the NLRB. Doesn't mean that Biden gets personal credit for their work.

There are multiple different reports about Biden administration's work, if you care to look.

I have been. Seemingly unlike you, though, my sources have not been limited to those that are effectively pro-DNC propaganda outlets.

Of course the administration had to navigate through the real world challenges and they couldn't manage to wave a wand and turn USA into utopia.

The eternal excuse of the incompetent and the corrupt. Nobody's demanding perfection. You're just far too easily impressed and/or blinded by tribalism.

But to ignore the work they've done

I'm not ignoring anything. Again, my standards are just higher than your abyssal ones.

You're as misinformed as Fox News viewer.

Hey, I found this picture of you!

And now we have example of Brandolini's law, "The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it."

Again with the projection. Your gish gallop is demagogue propaganda, not proof of anything.

Took you less than a minutes to be callously ignorant

Nah, I was just concise in my accurate description of affairs. Not my fault that your apologia is as verbose as it's misleading.

took me 15 minutes to refute it

You refuted nothing. Only thing you were right about was Lina Khan, and that was one decision on the advice of better people in a 4 year period of D to C- governing.

Get informed or get fucked.

Right back at you, buddy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The infrastructure bill and Lina Khan are the only things I've noticed. I think someone I know got a Pell Grant and was helped by that possibly? But ya, too many of these things are so mean-tested and you have to jump through hoops to get them that so many people don't benefit that people end up not caring. It's the equivalent of saying you got so many a band-aid for multiple stab wounds. Ya I guess it's better than nothing but it's not going to stop the bleeding and it's definitely not good enough for the problems the country is facing and how people feel about it. The Democrats just blame the Republicans for being awful, and they are, but they also have an extremely limited imagination in what they promise and give. It ends up leading to the ratchet effect. The Republicans turn us right, and the Democrats only reverse a few things, so we end up more right than before. This trend isn't sustainable and this combination is why we're turning fascist today.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Whatever buddy. All these 'useless' things done by democrats are going to get demolished by Trump and then some more. Keep vilifying democrats when they were the best chance your country had at improvement.

Enjoy the MAGA hellhole that's about to fuck everything up.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 days ago

All these 'useless' things done by democrats are going to get demolished by Trump and then some more

I know. That's why I've been pointing out that the American Fascist Party is much worse than the Dems. Which you would have noticed if you'd have bothered to read what I wrote before going on your tribalist tirades.

Keep vilifying democrats

Again, deserved criticism for inadequacy ≠ vilification. I save that for Republicans.

they were the best chance your country had at improvement

Least bad, but yeah. They fucked that right up though, by running a 1992 campaign where they pretend that the left doesn't exist in the 21st century yet again.

Their awful strategy and arrogance cost them the election, not me.

Enjoy the MAGA hellhole that's about to fuck everything up.

Right back at you once again. The people you're defending caused that.

except the microscopic level.

quantum level yes make it a fight there. levels above microscopic sure make it a fight there. But not microscopic level. we need at least one level where there's peace

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

My little microscopic sanctuary!

Hey good news, we can play a tug of war on the scale of states rights vs federal government rights. Test how strong can federalism resist tyranny of the federal government.

Lots of folks get inspired at different times in the country or in their lives. At 50 minutes is one particular story about Justin Douglas.

Like how “you are what you eat”, our country renews itself with a new generation feeling the call to action and actually running for something.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I signed up on the first website, still haven't heard anything. Anyone know who I should contact to follow up?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

They have an email contact at the bottom of their page [email protected]

If you are just trying to figure out more what you can run for, the second site I linked is helpful for that

Given the large number of people signing up right now, I wouldn't be suprised if it took them a bit to reach out

Don't tell me what I can't do!

I'll be the smoke monster in a few seasons anyway.
