Greenland’s elected leader said the gigantic Arctic island is not for sale after Donald Trump once again raised the issue of “ownership and control” of the vast territory that has been part of Denmark for more than 600 years.

“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede, said in a written comment.

The US president-elect on Sunday announced that he had picked Ken Howery, a former envoy to Sweden, as his ambassador to Copenhagen, and commented on the status of Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

I don't believe he mentioned buying it...

I have created a graphic which you are all free to use when this sort of thing needs to be explained.

It's all fun and games and a big joke until militaries start occupying sovereign states after being ordered by some delusional leaders that think they can do whatever they want because they surround themselves with people who won't question a damned thing.

Part of the problem is people like Turnip being in power .... the other half of the problem is everyone either standing around supporting him or doing absolutely nothing to stop or question him.

Any attack or occupation of a country member of the NATO treaty may trigger an article 5 declaration to which all NATO member countries are forced to answer or risk the breakdown of the NATO treaty alliance. Denmark is a NATO country. If Trump decides to pull an Israel, he risks a loss of military, geopolitical and trade allies, as well as a possible war and perhaps even the support of his constituency. If the US tried, it would be like chopping both of its legs and then one of the arms. The downspiral would be catastrophic.

Fat chance the Trump wranglers would let it get that far. He's a useful idiot but his powers aren't unlimited and i like to believe the people who actually govern the US aren't complete idiots. Greedy, inhumane, arrogant, ignorant, cruel and warmongering monsters, yes, but not complete idiots.

Well they DO have the high ground....

or doing absolutely nothing to stop or question him.

this is what i just can't wrap my head around... they've had four years to do something about this fucking thing, instead of the absolutely fucking nothing they've been doing the whole time

the person actively causing harm is not the problem the real fault lies in the people not stopping them

I really do not understand this rhetoric. It's illogical.

And I see it applied to all sorts of problems these days. Indicating a serious gap and incredible thinking ability in our society.

Trump supporters are a minority. Only about a quarter of the country voted for him, and half of those prob would've voted for any republican, if not more. The only reason trump and his supporters are as powerful as they are is because people with the means to oppose them have done nothing to do so. He could have been convicted for January 6th + a bunch of other shit, he could've been taken as a serious threat by democrats, they could've run a popular progressive candidate, he could've not been given a platform and legitimacy by liberal media. Instead the people who could have stopped or slowed him chose to do nothing, and trump was allowed to win in very much the same way he was the first time, except this year it happened with even more blatant promises of fascism

Trump going to emulate big daddy Putler and embark on a 3 day special operation after he’s back in the White House?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 22 hours ago

You gotta wonder how many of the orange asshole's enemies will soon start having problems with windows and poisonings.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 20 hours ago

I'm fairly certain Conan bought it back in 2019 after Trump inquired last time.

[–] [email protected] 43 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's really starting to sound less like "America first" and more like "America only." Pissing off the rest of the world isn't a very good business strategy coming from a guy that's supposedly good at business.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 20 hours ago

He's never been good at business. He inherited his wealth and bankrupted multiple businesses.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 19 hours ago

I think he'd probably prefer the phrase "Amerika über alles" instead, based on his reading preferences.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal.

America is clearly hot garbage and nobody wants in on the fire.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Pretty sure he's also threatened Mexico.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 hours ago

I think that was just invading and not occupying. Though history would indicate that Americans aren't capable of one without the other.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago

Half of us don't even want in on it. But here we are.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can NATO intervene when a NATO member is attacking a NATO member?

🤔

[–] [email protected] 16 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Trump also wants to pull out of NATO, so maybe that won't even be relevant.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 18 hours ago

oh...yes please. Love to have NATO free us from the repugnant filth and his blind faith cultists.

Dear NATO,

If you can get rid of him and his lackeys then we can be BFFs forever ❤️😘🥰

[–] [email protected] 4 points 23 hours ago

Oh so we get USA teams with Soviet Russia again? But this time with a bit of a plot twist. 😉

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Now that I managed to hold down the laughs, can someone be so kind in explaining the obcession with Greenland from Orange Man?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 day ago (3 children)
  • The strategic location of the politically Danish island, in addition to being a gateway to the Arctic, is extremely important for US security.
  • Greenland’s natural resources have been the target of interest from foreign companies and global powers.
  • Due to its importance, any change in foreign control or influence over Greenland can have implications for Denmark and for NATO.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 16 hours ago

I'm betting he wants it because it looks big on a map and he doesn't think anyone lives there.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What’s crazy is the US doesn’t need to own it since it’s Danish and therefore part of NATO. He’s such a dipshit, it’s exhausting

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

His (Putin's) plan is to break up NATO.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Well, if you remember one of his ideas was leaving NATO, so he is an idiot, but at least in this one thing he is consistent.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

So he is only half stupid but still dumb as a brick for spewing out these things.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

For purposes of justice and lolz throughout the world, the People feel that ownership and control of Mar-a-Lago is an absolute necessity.

More that Greenland is a huge track of land that will likely be free of ice in the next decade, and is entirely untapped for minerals as well as oil and gas.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

If we don't stop extracting and burning oil and gas, we're screwed as a species. But, let's face it, we've stuck our heads in the sand, and decided to call climate change fake so boomers could make a few extra bucks before they kick the bucket.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, it might also already be too late to revert the damage done. So the morons are going to go out as rich as possible

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

It's not too late. Pretty much all climate scientists will tell you that we can limit the damage. This is propaganda spread by oil companies, and it's been rather effective. They're no longer denying climate change, shifting the messaging to, well, either it isn't human driven, or it's too late to do anything different.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Huuuuge... tracts of land?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 21 hours ago

What.. the curtains?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

We're letting our favorite child Israel and our new step daddy Russia do it; why should we have to lose out?

Now, pardon me while I go repeatedly slam my head against a brick wall until I've decided it's time to cry, instead.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Alright, since Trump is so keen on territory expansion, let's make Western Ukraine the 51st US state. Eastern half goes to Russia. There will be plenty of living room for everyone.
