Please. All of this is mostly US politics. Please do not hijack "world news" to mean whatever new shit Desantis or someone else said this week. Every other magazine/community/whatever is already full of that shit. Please.

Please. Please. Please.

US politics already swamp out most of the content on the entire fediverse. It may seem like the world to you but there's almost 200 countries on this planet that are not the US.

PLEASE DO NOT.

Thank you.

So, submit more non US news?

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago

Yeah I don’t think this is something planned you can turn a dial on. People are just posting their news and the origin of people here probably skews heavily US.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

People commenting “be the change you want to see” like it’s their first day in the internet.

Mods will either need to step up and ban US news, or folks who care will need to find a new comm that only allows international news.

Reddit had a good system for this (gasp)

News was for US news, Worldnews specifically banned US news. If you wanted US news you went to news, if you wanted to catch up on news elsewhere you went to worldnews.

This system right now only serves Americans and until a split is put in place it will only serve Americans because the only posts people will see will be the ones all the Americans upvote

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was an ok-ish system which could be justified by reddit being a US-based company. It would have been better for the US to have its own US named politics sub. But the fediverse isn't based in one country, so the names can be a bit misleading for anyone browsing without Reddit-specific legacy knowledge.

There does need to be some way of reducing at least the scattershot crossposting in multiple places for the exact same content though. I tried to subscribe to multiple news and politics communities to get more globally sourced media and comments, but instead it's the exact same US-internal news links in triplicate from the same user. It's frequently interesting news, but not necessarily globally impactful enough to take up most of the screen.

I would support there being a US news, or similar pattern. Just calling US news, :news" is ummm... it's odd. It assumes the US is the center of things - and we aren't. And may be even less central as the world catches up (on the things we get right/might).

Hey, not for nothing but the US is sick and teetering on the precipice of Facism. If the US goes over the edge, the Fascism will be the main export, as "Freedom" is today. That has worldwide implications.

Right now our domestic politics are everyone's problem.

That is NOT to say there aren't other problems worthy of airtime here. Its been hot recently, have you noticed? Nobody seems to be serious about doing anything substantive about that. Let's talk about it.

There is a devastating war on in Ukraine threatening not only global stability, but also the world's supply of staple grains, rare earths, helium oil and natural gas. With a cloid of nuclear chaos draped over it. Talk about it.

Israel is running roughshod over the Palestinian state. (Irony, no?) Talk about it.

China is flxing its financial and geoplitical muscle in the AIPAC region. Ths is the next world war setting up. Talk about it.

Africa has several bloody wars going on with both Western and Eastern powers shoveling chaos into that mess. A continent of rich nations being fleeced by the East and West. Just like always. Guess what you can do?

Central and South America are dealing with their own power struggles between Hard Right and Hard Left factions, again with undue outside influences from Eastern and Western powers. And, we cant seem to stop destroying rain forests.

Everyone is dealing with serious challenges both foreign and domestic. Post about it.

If you're twisted about the probkems in the.US dominating the Hot page, then post, comment and be to change you need.to see, because of you're just gonna sit on your ass right now and complain about it, then you get what you get.

And also...? Sorry. I am NOT having a good day.

Edits: typos and some grammar

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Do you really think anyone outside the US thinks "freedom" is your main export? Lmao

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I think the fact that he used scare quotes himself implies that they don't believe the US actually exports freedom either.

Meh, Europe has been dealing with fascist and other extremist people in politics for 20 years on a larger scale, and in some circles and areas of the world it's never gone away. It's nothing new, we just know better how to deal with them and they come and go. Instead of thinking it's some new American thing the rest of the world needs to learn about, you should learn how politics elsewhere works.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Problem is that these Americans talk. A lot.

The grim reaper in Monty Python wasn't just whining. The struggle is real.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If it is a story from the US that would make international news if it were in another country, it should be posted here. I'm from Canada, US politics is world news to me. Their wretched politics seeps across our border, it's material to my day to day life to stay abreast of the broad current events in the US, just like the UK.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"World news" and no news about India and Pakistan's latest shenanigans. lmao.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think you can post whatever you want.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Thats's entirely a question of moderation. I do not.know how actively this community is moderated.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is ultimately just pointless whining. Also, "the entire fediverse" is taken up by us politics? It's barely a big deal on Lemmy.world as a whole.

Seeing US news just means there are more US posters. You need to increase participation from other people. It's not stopping others from posting.

Want more non-US news? The answer isn't less US news. That doesn't make it magically have other content.

We get it, you have an axe to grind with US Americans thinking they're the center of attention.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not about having more similarly pointless content, it's about having less of it. Well unless world news really means all kinds of news from everywhere, i.e. any little village anywhere. Dog got lost? World news. Corruption scandal in a town of 300? World news...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Pretending that US national politics doesn't affect the world is deceptive at best, naive at worst.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm from Europe but also very interested in US politics. I still think that the bullshit that's happening in Florida with DeSantis or PragerU, just as an example, is not world news worthy.

How DeSantis is polling for the Republican primaries is worthy to be posted in world news, I would say.

It's a fine line, but the fact that there are other communities where the latter can be discussed in depth, makes it fair to require world news to not be muddied with internal US politics posts. Also for US citizens, to more easily find news pertaining to news outside the US.

That being said, I just browse through my feed without looking too much which community it was posted in, so it hasn't bothered me personally.

/l/politics already ran me off for trying to opine in on a more diverse political discourse than just US news.

Mod told me, "...all politics is local, and few care about international politics. You also have a language barrier that also makes global political forums less interactive."

Then banished my opinion.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

What kind of cult are they running over there?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I would take it with a grain of salt. From my experience, 9/10 users who complain about a ban embellish it so they look like they were in the right.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tbf, the lemmy.world politics community does have rules stating US-only posts. They could have chosen a better name, but they didn't. World news doesnt have any such rules so it's hard to know if their intent was foreign affairs related news between various countries or just news from around the world. Until they clarify, folks will likely interpret how they wish, and unfortunately it looks like that's gonna lead to a bunch of US centric news (based on observation, though I don't know why). Posting it in politics or uspolitics would reach a better audience, but folks are gonna do what they do.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

In my opinion, the mods chose the name because US politics is the only news that matters to them. They could very easily open themselves up to other countries' political news but they resist that. It just seems stupid to act like the US is the main character.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So it's like the 'world' in 'world series'?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

When I grew weary of a specific perspective in certain places, and wanted to see a broader diversity... I started threads with citations from that viewpoint/fact-set.

It's not the mods job to feed us threads. Their job is to keep things civil and to be fair to everyone who choses to participate.

Wait do they think local is only for the USA? like somehow outside their borders local politics don't exist because it is all some how "international"? Wait, does that mean they think when the USA does foreign policy that it is not "international"?

Wow, the mental gymnastics needed to be a member of the USA must be tiring.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

They're trying to defend their choice of community name (arguably not doing a good job in my opinion). A lot of people have been complaining in other communities and I think they're getting defensive. Personally I think they chose poorly but ultimately it's not my call, so whatever. Only ones who can force them to change would be lemmy.world mods. They're saying there's no such thing as generic politics and that it'd all be local to somewhere so their claim to the name is fine (at least that's my interpretation based on what you said). Again, I disagree with the quality of their choice but I accept that it's their choice.

US is literally becoming a menace to the World.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Always has been

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

We should create a community named worldnewsnotusa.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm guessing the U.S. isn't in the world?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

You've got the power to be the change you want to see.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (5 children)

World News is always bound to be dominated by the news of the spoken language. While English is spoken very broadly, the US is the dominant speaker by population. Most "international" news will be written in the native language of the afflicted area. Since people here want English content, you're going up see mostly English speaking areas. Since the US is the largest, it'll be mostly US news.

If you don't like it, start sourcing interesting English content about non-english locations.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

So if my quick math is right the news should be about 2/3s USA

331 million in the USA vs 132 million in Canada, UK, and Australia.

I mean it seems more then 2/3s, and I am not including the other 86 English speaking countries....

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

On Reddit, there were/are some subreddits where you could/can talk about world news, and that means news from other countries outside US. But those news didn't have to be specifically written in English. There was a non-forced rule to provide a translation in English to those news inside the comments. So, you could post about "Macron dit qu'il ne démissionnera", and you can see in the comments the reasons why Macron won't resign.

That would be a great solution to the lack of content in English about news from Spain, France, Italy...

honestly, why not do what reddit did and restrict US news to a specific sublemmy

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

That can happen, but this is community run. It's not like you can force people to only post where you want them too. Those communities already exist. And as far as I can tell, it's not breaking any rules in this community. Discussions need to be opened with the mods to define clearer rules and maybe enforce the rules themselves or find volunteers to do so. But this post isn't the solution.

I also struggle with this often as a 'Merican expat living in another country, hopefully permanently. Occasionally I wanna catch up on US shit but most of the time I care more about what's going on in Europe and other places so I couldn't care less about the perpetually stupid shit happening back in the US.

I'm still learning the language where I moved to so English news resources that are about other places can be very valuable to me. My main resource (and advice to others with this issue) is using an RSS reader with good sources you find along the way. Not every site has RSS these days but many do. I fill in the blanks with podcasts and stories in the language of my country. Only downside is no discussion unless you post on Lemmy or other social media, but maybe that can become a thing we do. :)
