Hope they mean they're ashamed of the sexism (That weird cat fight between Tifa and Scarlet, everything about Cid, etc) and not the leftist themes.

I just remembered the slap fight minigame in FFVII michael-laugh

To be fair, all those weird swerves and rough edges are why I love VII so much but I can see why they wouldn't recreate them in 4k

Even so, FF7 Remake should've had no major changes.

It's such a disappointment that after all these decades waiting for it to be remade, we got a new version no one asked for. That's what should be embarassing.

It made me like it. I very much disliked original FF7 and I greatly enjoy Remake.

I do appreciate what it became, and I love that the new version is more accessible to people who wouldn't look twice at the original. But a part of me is still kind miffed that they pretended for a while that it was a remake and not a screwy sequel of sorts. There's many parts to the "remake" that only make sense to fans who consumed every previous FF7 content released, but at least a great deal of it is only fan service, like the three whispers you fight before Sephiroth are very similar to the trio of villains in the Advent Children movie and they even summon Bahamut like in the movie.

There's definitely a pretty hard quality cutoff between the parts that were new and the parts that were adapted. Fukken Jesse running around with a big "I WILL DIE IN AN EMOTIONAL SCENE" sign hanging around her neck for twenty hours, and then the scene itself is screwed by the voice acting. Overall though I feel like modern (post-FF15) Final Fantasy has good enough gameplay to make up for its often lackluster storytelling, which is funny because I used to say the exact opposite thing about Final Fantasy 7 and earlier.

[Final Fantasy] VI included a lot of elements that each department on their own, just on a whim, wanted to include, so they just included it, while VIII is much more calculated and strategized. VII is a mix of that, where it’s both calculated and kind of an at-a-whim type of development.

FFVI and VII are both great while VIII mostly sucks ass thonk

At least none of them have blitzball

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

As a game, Blitzball sucked to play, but I do respect how it was woven into the game's worldbuilding.

Hold up, I'm logging in to defend Blitzball, the best minigame of all time

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

I'd rather chocobo race for the rest of my life than play one more game of blitzball.

Yeah that part made me raise an eyebrow. Final Fantasy VIII is the one where you tightened down on the writing process? The game with possibly the biggest plotholes and most unbelievable contrivances in the entire franchise? Seriously?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

He's not talking about the quality or tightness of the overall plot but rather how prior to VIII there was less overall oversight and control over individual team members' contributions in terms of content and tone

VIII is definitely more consistent throughout and has less random tangents with haunted ghost trains, opera houses, crossdressing or Chinese ninja villages

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

So he kept it really vague. I guess that's what I would expect, but given the changes we've seen in how stuff like the Honey Bee and Cloud's crossdressing sidequest were portrayed we can kinda guess what he's talking about.

I remember reading a forum post in GAF back in the day that was like, “it’s 2003, can we stop pretending Final Fantasy 7 was good?”

It’s not great. Even for its time it was way more significant than it was a good game.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago
