No nation is real, especially ones created after major wars. The identity has to be tied to something bigger, which baathism failed to do first when it betrayed Nasser and secondly when it broke with Saddam. People were Syrian because the people with guns called themselves Syrians. Now there are new people with guns.
It makes sense if they are going to fix the chaos via strict implementation of sharia.
