Thanks, still some tidying up to do :)

Edit: that ones fixed but let me know if anything else wonky comes up!

Glad its faster too!

[–] Demigodrick 5 points 8 months ago

Update:

  • Main site is back up - let me know of anything not working!
  • images should be working
  • site should be faster with any luck
  • work is still ongoing in the window around secondary services like the mobile site, please be aware that something could still go wrong.

Window is open until 18:00 UTC - until then we could still need to restore the site to an older version, any posts might go missing if that is the case.

I'll make a final post when we're done.

totally a federation test

[–] Demigodrick 6 points 8 months ago

Thats very kind, thank you :)

[–] Demigodrick 3 points 8 months ago

I believe there are discussions around "batching" updates together rather than sending each update as it happens. Pros and cons both ways (slower federation updates, but less resource) so the very clever people and devs will hopefully be able to come up with a good solution.

Sunaurus is doing lots of work to it and i try to put the latest version up every couple of days, so hopefully lots of changes to come!

[–] Demigodrick 7 points 8 months ago

Thank you! It makes me really happy to know people enjoy using the site! :)

I barely ever go there either now too, can't stand all the adverts.

Yeah pretty much, we're still on an upwards trend of active users so thats taking some of the resource.

Part of the issue is all of the federation traffic as the rest of the fediverse grows, and processing all of that. Some sites have struggled with lemmy.world for example due to their size.

The backend services (such as pictrs to serve images) are getting more advanced but that also requires more resources.

Here's a handy site to check your federation status: https://phiresky.github.io/lemmy-federation-state/site?domain=social.packetloss.gg

It looks like all the sites are lagging, which can sometimes mean there is an issue. What's the specs of the server? Can you try restarting it and seeing if that helps?

There are issues for servers hosted in places like Australia because of the latency in communicating with .world due to how big it is and how much data it sends because of this.

Should be significantly faster now!

Have dropped you a message on matrix :)

Hi All,

You may have seen the issues occurring on some lemmy.world communities regarding CSAM spamming. Thankfully it appears they have taken the right steps to reducing these attacks, but there are some issues with the way Lemmy caches images from other servers and the potential that CSAM can make its way onto our image server without us being aware.

Therefore we're taking a balanced approach to the situation, and try to take the least impactful way of dealing with these issues.

As you read this we're using AI (with thanks to @db0's fantastic lemmy-safety script) to scan our entire image server and automatically delete any possible CSAM. This does come with caveats, in that there will absolutely be false positives (think memes with children in) but this is preferable to nuking the entire image database or stopping people from uploading images altogether.

But this will at least somewhat guarantee (although maybe not 100%, but better than doing nothing) that CSAM is removed from the server.

We have a pretty good track record locally with account bannings (maybe one or two total) which is great, but if we notice an uptick in spam accounts we'll look to introduce measures to prevent these bots from creating spam if they slip past the registration process - ZippyBot can already take over community creation, which would stop any new account creating communities and only those with a high enough account score would be able to do so, for example.

We don't need (or want) to enable this yet, but just want you all to know we have tools available to help keep this instance safe if we need to use them.

Any questions please let me know.

Thanks all
Demigodrick

Hi all,

For those of us with Early Access we get our hands on the game in a matter of hours. Therefore I'd like to remind everyone about our spoiler policy.

Spoiler policy:

  • No spoilers in titles; if you want to share images with spoilers, preferably post the image in the body of the post. If you do make an image post, mark it NSFW.
  • Add [Spoilers] to your title if there will be untagged spoilers in the post.
  • Game mechanics and general discoveries (ship parts, weapons, etc) don’t need a spoiler tag.
  • Details about questlines and other story related content are spoilers. Use your best judgement!

We'll be keeping a close eye and handing out warnings to first-time offenders, and bans to repeat offenders.

Remember - spoilers are OK as long as they are tagged properly. Images of spoilers need to be tagged NSFW so they don't automatically load for people.

We’re just a few days away from the launch of Starfield (if you bought the Premium Edition) and if you have pre-installed you might want to make sure you’ve also downloaded the 15.48GB day one patch that was released yesterday.

Depending on which edition you have bought or if you’re playing through GamePass the game might be playable for you in just 3 days time.

Here is the global release schedule for both the standard edition and premium version.

If you’re playing via GamePass you will have the standard edition however you can upgrade to the premium edition for £34.99 and play on September 1st.

Hey all,

Another quiet week in the Lemmy landscape, so just some small topics to cover this week.

Previous PartsPart 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8 / Part 9

TL;DR

  • Rules update - No ban evasion allowed here or on other instances
  • Donations - They're always welcome
  • Interaction - Please interact!
  • Stats - graphs!

Rules Update

I've updated the rules in the sidebar to be explicit around ban evasions. If you're banned here and create other accounts to try and evade these bans, we'll extend the ban or take further steps where needed. If you're banned on other instances, and you create accounts here or elsewhere to evade those bans, and its reported to us, we'll ban you here too. We won't allow people to misuse this instance or hurt its reputation in the wider fediverse.

Donations

As always, we're extremely thankful to people who are kind enough to donate. You can always see the instance's financial position on OpenCollective, and what we're aiming towards. If you do donate, you'll get your name in the Thank You Thread.

Its also awesome to see we now have 20 contributors - Thank you all! 😁

Want to help but not in a position to do so financially? Then please remember to interact with the instance!

Interaction

As always, welcome to the new Lemmy.zip users, I hope you're enjoying your time here.

This is my weekly reminder to people to please interact with the instance. That can be in the form of upvoting content, creating posts or comments and generating discussion, or even creating communities and gather like-minded people to discuss a topic.

Interaction is one of the key measures that helps rank Lemmy instances, and we've been able to punch above our weight in terms of user numbers vs activity. This helps promote the instance and in turn bring new people in. Please do interact, it helps out so, so much!

Stats

Cpu usage over the last 7 days:

Network usage:

Backblaze stats:

Cloudflare stats over last 7 days:

And finally, USA firmly back in front this week!

Thats all for this week, but as always please let me know if there are any other stats you'd like to see.
