Off-topic but I’m rewatching HBO’s Rome with my partner right now. One thing that strikes me about it is that they did not glorify this society whatsoever. They show even the most sympathetic characters to be totally habituated to slavery, rape, domestic abuse and a brutal caste system while still framing these acts as unambiguously evil. It would have been easy to have an audience insert who is the one moral person in an immoral time, like Vikings did with the English monk, but they took the tougher and more honest route.

Now I'm not a super-informed comic historian, but Batman has changed significantly since the start. I think perhaps Bruce Wayne's character being 'a millionaire playboy) was simply the creators originally trying to explain 'realistically' a character who could afford all these toys and the time and energy to fight crime at night.

Sort of, not really. He was originally rich because he’s loosely based off of Zorro, who was loosely based off the Scarlet Pimpernel and The Count of Monte Cristo, who are rich aristocrats. Being an old-money aristocrat of European descent is kind of important to Batman’s gothic byronian hero thing. If they reimagined him as a nouveau-rich tech bro billionaire it would make the character fundamentally different.

If he had just kept this private and done it as a silly act of devotion to his wife, instead for weird crypto-fascist Rome-worshipping dweeb reasons, this would have been the first semi-cool thing he’s ever done.

I know. It’s disappointing. His work gave me a huge shot in the arm when I needed it most as a kid. We’ve been Whedon’ed.
